I was going to say that if you could get one of wicker ammo boxes from a Rubicon Models 88 kit, you could reproduce this by making a “modellers mold”. However, the link SteveT give us above might even be an easier and faster solution.

I think the reason this keeps coming up from time to time is because in the older rule book you would measure from the gun.

  • Hello fellow Bolt Action fans. I just stumbled across this “Different Methods for Activating Units” idea for Bolt Action the other day on Board Game Geek. I also did a quick search here on the official Bolt Action forum to see what people think. Surprisingly, it is not mention… yet.

Anyway, I just had to share this with other Bolt Action fans…[Read more]

  • I’m sure there are others.

As for myself, I like a good campaign that links games together. That is, losses and gains in one game carry over to the next.

You had mentioned solo play. For this, I really recommend looking into a system called “Platoon Forward” by Joseph Legan. Believe it or not, it works really well with Bolt Action.

What should the FG42 be categorized as?

Stuart already did a great job at responding to this, but I will add my thoughts.

Using Bolt Action’s game mechanics, Weapons Chart (p.62), and Types of Weapons (p.63), the FG42 should really be considered an “Automatic Rifle” in the game for the same reasons Stuart already mentioned, but also to support…[Read more]

  • It sort goes against the rules as written, but what we do in my gaming club is that officer teams can give orders to other officer teams of lower rank, but officer teams cannot give orders to other officer teams of higher rank. That is, a lieutenant cannot order a captain, but a captain can order a lieutenant.

Yes, I know the FAQ does not…[Read more]

  • Kar98k replied to the topic Unit sizes? in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 2 months ago

In the Armies of Germany (2nd. edition), the unit size for German paratroopers is 10 men. In the the new Italy campaign book the size is 12 men. Any reason for the difference?

Simple really, because both are correct.

Early in the war, the Fallschirmjäger squads had a full strength of eight to twelve men – eight and ten men for glider born squads…[Read more]

  • No worries about using the “Fallschirmjäger late war (1943-45)” plastic boxed set for the Italian Campaign. The package should really say “Fallschirmjäger (1942-45)”. One note to make about the plastic box set is that even though they were better equipped than most other units, there is plenty of evidence of them using MG34s – especially for 42 an…[Read more]

  • Yes, the building is afire for the rest of the game.

Adding to this from the FAQ:

In those rare occasions where we use three or even four
story buildings, if a unit occupies the top floor of the building
when it is set on fire, how does it exit? The maximum run order only
allows it to reach the bottom floor at most and not exit the building.
    Are…[Read more]

  • The rules are pretty clear that the tank riders must dismount before the shot is taken, and then the riders go Down.

Whether or not they provide soft cover for the vehicle, well, that is a different matter as pointed out above. The rules suggest “yes”, but only because soft cover doesn’t necessarily mean physical cover, it can also represent an…[Read more]

  • With all this 88 talk, and pictures like the one shown before (from WG front page), I really encouraged to put some paint to my 88s I have assembled.

For sure, one of the 88s I plan to paint will be in overall dunkelgelb so it can perform double duty as mid to late war Europe and North Africa (close enough). I will have two sets of crew. For the…[Read more]

  • Kar98k replied to the topic Gebirgsjäger setup in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 4 months ago

Are there specific Gebirgjäger support weapons and transport vehicles that I should consider?

This is from the latest FAQ, but I’m sure the concept applies to all. Including a Gebirgsjäger Force, so this should help some:

“I want to collect an army of paratroopers. However there are no
specific paratrooper officers, snipers, MMG teams, etc to go…[Read more]

  • Im looking for german light mortar (western front, Normandy).
On warlord store I found only a light mortar in afrika corps set.

Do you know if there is a generic light mortar?

    Steel, what about this one?

  • I finally got to the RM’s 88. As mentioned before, anyone of these plastic kits (Italeri/Warlord, Rubicon Models) would be a great addition to anyone’s collection. These are so much better than the older/resin metal kits for multiple reasons. That being said, I like how the RM kit give you the wheels and lots of extra stuff like fired shells,…[Read more]

  • “Don’t tell anyone – but I’m not going to use BA. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to wreck 300 infantry for future BA use.”

Then it doesn’t matter, does it? Just go with what the other rule set suggests.

As for BA basing, as long as all parties are in agreement, then no worries. However, I know that using bases of different sizes c…[Read more]

  • This is a continuation of the 88 post just above.

As mentioned earlier, the Italeri 88 model is exactly the same. The only difference are the box and box art, assembly instructions, decals, and the crew figures. The crew figures are plastic and do not have that heroically oversized look. They will mix in with my WW2 Perry Miniatures plastics.…[Read more]

  • I couldn’t see why not. Unless you are into 100% perfect accuracy, then they should work just fine for gaming purposes.

Like Greg S, I also use the Perry Miniatures (plastic) for some of the British in the Pacific because I’m a bigger fan of the more atomically correct Perry plastics than the much more overly heroic sized newer Warlord Games…[Read more]

  • Combat Miniature offer water-slide decals for small vehicles and ships, and they do make some French stuff including a sheet with roundels and flags. The bigger flag might be too big for infantry, but the smaller flag is about 0.120″ and might work for you. Have a look at…[Read more]

  • Yes, they are very nice figures, but some of us were hoping we would be able to use the arms from the older set with this new set. This way we would get a lot more arm options and choices to work with. However, looks like we can’t because if attempted, you get something like Arnold Schwarzenegger bodies with skeleton arms – looks funny.

  • Kar98k replied to the topic Japanese Minis in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 9 months ago

You are not alone. I also have the plastic Japanese infantry. I know what you are talking about. In fact, this is one of the main reasons I made a comment about this sometime ago. Here is a link:

The problem is not the height of the figures, but its…[Read more]
