  • Sorry, I think this has gone into the wrong part of the forum – my bad!

I’ve repeated it in the Bolt Action sub forum.

  • Hi everyone,

after playing as the Germans for quite a while, I was thinking of a change. I’ve always liked the idea of the French Forces of the Interior (the FFI). For the few who haven’t heard of them they were the semi-organised and semi-uniformed partisans who rose up after D-Day. There’s some really great pictures of them, plus film foota…[Read more]

I think it depends on the terrain you’re fighting in.

In rural terrain, I’d personally use the weapon scale as the yarstick to measure it by. The 24″ maximum range of a rifle will probably be 400 yards/metres. So a 6 foot x 4 foot board would be 1200 yards/metres by 800 yards/metres. Maybe 1.2km by 0.8km? (3/4 of mile by 1/2 a mile). This isn’t…[Read more]

  • dont worry about it, its how we learn, I’ve learnt as much by writing these guides as by reading the rules.

  • Thank you for the prompt response. I re-read the movement rules last night and found my mistake in regards to the one (1) inch rule. I apologize for my error.

    Respectfully,

    Pete.

  • Hi Peter,

Re movement – all ships have to move at least 1″ unless the condition is one of the 3 i mentioned.  They are not able to turn unless they’ve moved 1″with agile or 2″ normally with lumbering (limited to 1 turn per move)

Re Orders – yes they’re supposed to be in the ship activation irrespective of the order.  I’ll have to correct that i…[Read more]

I’d say torpedoes are the deadliest weapon in the game! I think if you play a few matches you’ll see that ships can and do close to short range, especially destroyers, and that devastation results. Destroyers and cruisers can torpedo a battleship or fleet carrier off the table in a single attack. Ignore torpedoes at your fleet’s peril…

  • One range people use is Copplestone Castings ‘Back of Beyond’ chinese.

  • Good Evening. My name is Pete. My residence is New York State. I have been a historical gamer since I was in high school forty plus (40+) years ago. There has not been a set of rules I have not bought or tried. Currently, I am new to the Victory at Sea rule set. Therefore, I am unsure of the game mechanics.

    Respectfully,

    Pete.

  • Good Evening Nat. I downloaded your cheat sheet today. It is helpful in speeding up play. I definitely like how you did the gunnery chart.

However, I noticed a discrepancy in the Movement section. It reads, “Move ship at least 1″ unless ‘run aground’, flank speed of 0″ or anchored” (FAQ March 2021). Ships must move 2″ unless they have the ‘agile’…[Read more]

  • For the sake of integrity, I should mention that the calculations I made assumed that the defender only had 1 AA die.

Once you have more AA being fired at you, the gap between the two planes closes, but not by much.

For example, if we go from 1AA to 4AA, the survivability of the bomber only goes up another 12% relative to the torpedo…[Read more]

Love how someone has looked at the rules and gone useless here yet in the wardroom people are going they need nerfing as they are too deadly!

As I said it’s slightly easier to understand as you realise how the books been assembled .. not that it was expanded clearer..

  • I suppose the other thing is that bombs can hit targets on land.

  •

So I applied a little game theory to this, and discovered the following:

A bomber with 3DD can expect to deal 0.5 damage per attack against an armor value of 4.

A torpedo-bomber with 4DD and the Devastating trait can expect to deal 4.67 damage per attack against ANY armor value.

Considering the Swordfish variants, the torpedo bomber has…[Read more]

  • If you decide to play in 1944, then these planes just get way better for no extra points? It may be historically accurate, but doesn’t seem balanced on a tabletop. What am I missing?

Simple answer:  Nothing.    But how many ballanced carrier fights had been there in 44/45?    As often two worlds collide, the pure wargamer that wants equal ch…[Read more]

  • Shrakins and Nat are 100 % right.

The chances are roughly based on real world ones or even better.

Take for example 3. Schnellboot Flottille in med. from 9/40 to 1/45.

    184 Torpedoes fired at warships 22 hits           1 hit in 8,3 fired   With a D6 ………

53 at merchant ships   13 hits

    11 at stationary ships  3  hits ! ( Hitting sandbar…[Read more]
