  • To be fair, the core rules don’t use figure scales and only have implied ground scales. Many of the supplements use this flexibility to change the size of standard units from battalions to companies etc. GH is one of the best supplements so don’t be put off. Anyway using your unit sizes and the brigade compositions in the scenario will enable you…[Read more]

  • Well meant to end with Jim, not No. My tablet is putting its own answers down!

  • The answers above are pretty straight forward… Black Powder is a “tool kit” that taken all together provides a set of rules to game in the Black Powder period.  To make the system work over more than a 200 year period the rules could not be so granular as to differentiate between guns other than to allow you the freedom to classify them as…[Read more]

  • Thanks for the answer. But no it doesn’t help. I bought the rules and the supplement, based my figures per the rules recommendation and you’re telling me that the supplement that was written for these rules has scenarios that don’t follow the rulebook recommendations. Ok that makes sense. So yes it is frustrating.

    No.

  • Thanks for that.

I think this means both are “standard” size but a British 9dr battery is classed as normal “foot” (with a range of 48″) and a French 8 gun 12 pdr battery can be classed as “heavy” (with a range of 60″, like siege).  I guess this would make sense as it gives the French an advantage of 2 dice from 30″ rather than at 24″.  Is this correct?

  • Range. It is the different ranges that make the difference.

  • the game isnt ganular enough for that level.  so 3-4 guns is a half battery, 6-8 a standard and 12+ is a large (russian) one.  With the guns being classified as battalion, light /Horse, foot, and heavy/siege.

Dont forget if you look in the Napoleonic supplements and the rulebook you’ll notice some units change which type of guns they have … a…[Read more]

  • Hi all – I am new to Black Powder but really enjoying playing it with my 15mm Napoleonics. Quick question that is bugging me though – how is the firepower of a French 8 gun 12 pdr artillery company reflected versus the firepower of a British 6 gun 9 pdr company? Surely there must be a difference but I can’t find it – sorry for the dumb newbie…[Read more]

  • You compare training results with real life ones.   In reality the British Aerial torpedo had no bigger chance than other nations. These had own systems, mostly optical ones.

In the many attacks by British torpedo planes against the Kriegsmarine in Channel and Biskaya the hitting rate was not impressive. Similar  to Luftwaffe pilots most got ne…[Read more]

  • @ Darin, a 2″ template isn’t going to hit any other units unless someone forgot the 1″ rule between units 😉 (you’d be lucky to clip anyone with a 3″) – remember with vehicles the template needs to be centred over the target vehicle.

  • The only step I can think you missed is placing the 2″ template after the hit roll to see if any other units could be hit.

  • I do think the torpedo rules are missing a +1 bonus of British air dropped torpedoes, British torpedo bombers used a wire real that resulted in a consistent level drop, virtually every photo has had this edited out to maintain secrecy, which allowed for a 50%+ hit rate a Toronto compared to the much lower rate at pearl harbour by the Japanese.…[Read more]

Sorry, Mike, but as I said in my response, if a unit is fighting to its flank, it cannot be supported. So, the Combat Resolution will not add +1 for each supporting unit – page 70 Units unable to be supported – Units fighting to its side or rear.

  • Mike replied to the topic Questions of rules in the forum Black Powder 4 years, 8 months ago

In the example, of three battalions charging the flank of unit normally only one unit will melee and the other two units will provide potentially flank or rear support.  So say both units normally got 6 HTH attacks… then the attacker would get 6 attacks and the “flanked” defender would get 3 HTH attacks (the other 3 would fight to the front and…[Read more]

    1) Yes artillery can move and fire. Artillery can be manhandled a total of 6 inches regardless of how low your command roll is. Movement happens during the Command Phase and shooting during the Shooting Phase. Some of the supplements have suggested rules to reduce the distances that a unit can move and still fire, but they are suggestions and not…[Read more]

@steiner & Stuart – just to confuse things a little though… a rule of picking a target before rolling to hit is on the units of soviet snipers* in the Stalingrad campaign book as part of their special rules.
