That Chaplains are 100 % non combatants is a popular myth. They are officers and allowed personal arms like pistols. Many British or German ones in both World wars fought. Even more doctors did. They too had a pistol. One German one even commanded a tank battalion for some time. Legally!
Only in serving in a hospital or tending a wou…[Read more]

But you think it’s ok for an unarmed mortar team reduced to 1 man to take an objective?

SteveT started the topic Going to open order to ignore skirmishers in the forum Hail Caesar 5 years, 6 months ago
Related to my other post about “who can use open order”.
Can a unit change from open to formed, just so it can ignore enemy skirmishers? Seems odd

I’ve seen it as a side note in various unit type descriptions but its not clear to me what the overall rule is.
For example, can a unit of heavy infantry voluntarily enter open formation to traverse a forest? Can a war band?
Thanks

I’m with Master Chief on this. The rules do not say anything about Spotters not being able to take stuff. The fact the rules do specifically single out medics as being unable to capture suggests they are the only notable exception.
ALSO:
From rules: “The spotter is part of the mortar or artillery team”
So if the mortar crew can capture…[Read more]

Shouldn’t be to hard to do a Russian civil war (1917-1919?) The french, us and British forces are ww1 .. just need to work out the OrBats of the red and white Russians
You can also do Chinese civil war using the empires in flames Chinese lists…same book also has the sino-russian war of the mid to late 30s

Hi,
yes you have the right of it…local 1 with nothing in the AD column of the battery will give you only 1 dice only to AA with and can only target flights that are touching its base

1) Yes, it splits into two combats.
2) If it’s break test result was to hold its ground, yes it stands and fights in the next turn.
3) Nobody. The situation ended as it was in the diagram. All units are engaged, so there is nobody in a position to offer support to any friends.
4) No, it gets its full number of attacks.
If the unit that was f…[Read more]

This situation threw up lots of confusion: 2 Gallic war bands vs 4 small Camillan Roman infantry.
(Q1) We assumed it is rolled as 2 fights. Is anything in support at the start of the round? (see pic) We assumed not as all units are engaged at the front.
So after round 1. One Gaul unit won the fight. Its two Roman opposing units had to roll…[Read more]

Hi,
AA – in the movement phase local X may shoot any aircraft flight that passes over the ship…this number of dice maybe used once per flight that passes over….
At the start of the shooting phase AA + local X may shoot at any flights touching the base of the ship BEFORE any ship is chosen to fire…each AD can only be used once.. chose…[Read more]

Personally I’d have said no… because a spotter is an upgrade to a unit not a unit him (or her)self.. in that they dont provide an order die (they merly use the mortar /howitzers*) & unless the FAQ says otherwise that’ll be the way I’ll play it
*dont forget the spotter runs away when their gun/mortar dies /runs…..

On the massive damage question: They both have +4 armour penetration so it seems reasonable to me. Assuming actual damage was scored by busting through the boat’s armour, then the boat can trigger its special.
The heavy howitzer would still apply lots of pins though, on a hit, as it’s not a damage roll. So in that sense the heavy howitzer is…[Read more]

SteveT replied to the topic Small unit frontages in the forum Pike & Shotte 5 years, 6 months ago
Thank you very much. I was in fact just facing this decision when I read your message.
I think the way forward for us, due to the lack of a gargantuan table, is to reduce all distances by 30%. Including unit frontages then.
12 men does seem about right then. (6 wide x 2 deep) (actually 3 bases of 2 x 2 men)
Then I thought what about pikes. …[Read more]
