Nat replied to the topic How does AA fire against Flights and Flight attacks on Ships ACTUALLY work? in the forum Victory At Sea 5 years, 1 month ago
you missed the 3rd option… the ship doesn suffer a -1 to their AA (the whole flights section is contridictors.. AA doesnt suffer modifier, except against large or kamikazes..so why not evading as well)
This is why I’ve not done any crib sheet or looked at any scenarios.. I feel that the extra rules will alter what we have a fair bit!

There is no problem… it actually came out of another discussion about small arms with a PEN value (while we agree that they cant get a positive PEN… in theory I suppose you could have a negative PEN value on small arms… but that would be a v2 for impovised weaponary….like a baseball bat or cricket ball :p) and if you could get a heavy…[Read more]

Hi Chrisitian, if you look in the thread wardroom FAQ, i’ve done a complete breakedown of how AA works in the FAQ thats attached.
In the QSR for aircraft attacking ships, they hit on their own score, no modifiers (only kamikazes say to use them, the others say not to) and evade will still take effect as its any successful attack.

Rules are not clear in many parts, I agree with you.
But in this case there is no problem, HE1 means pen +1 then can damage and pin armoured vehicle, and all other things HE do.

Bolt Action rulebook 2nd Ed page 70 (last sentence of paragraph above HE table):
Note that the models removed as casualties can come from anywhere in the unit, not just from the models within the explosion radius.
So the answer to both your questions is “No”. For HE exceptional damage, the attacker chooses the model to remove. In the case the…[Read more]

If exceptional damage is scored whilst rolling within a HE template….. must the casualty be taken from a man within that template?
How about normal hits? Could they be taken from outside the template?
Seems odd if “yes”

There is the usual gap between history and simple game rules.
Can aircraft attack a ship prorected by a smokescreen? Surely not if the ship is not moving like Tirpitz in Norway. Smoke dischargers at the coast and on pontoons produced a Screen that made the RN and RAF attackers blind.
A moving ship will not be in such a thick screen. S…[Read more]

I would recommend the Last Argument of Kings supplement (£7.50 for the pdf). It amends the rules for the 18th Century battles in several interesting ways. As has been said it removes the attack column and also modifies how march columns deploy.…[Read more]

I was reading today. It doesn’t seem like battalions squares (and perhaps, too, brigade squares) as well as attack columns weren’t used commonly until the Napoleonic Wars. So, knowing this, should I not allow these formations in my War of Spanish Succession scenarios? How about any other scenarios that precede the Napoleonic Wars? Please advise.

@clockwork, are you on Facebook? If so the wardroom has a document with the commonally used in naval war games abbreviations – although most are NATO to be honest :p

I don’t think this has come up much…if at all
now the diagrams show smoke from the base…but the rules indicate that it should be the bridge – good question will ask the wardroom!
aircraft attacking ships in smoke, I’m tempted to say no they can’t because they wouldn’t be able to see the ships to attack…however I don’t thin the QSR says…[Read more]

Hello again community and friends,
First, I want to thank all of you for your most helpful replies.
Second, my new issue. I’m painting 4 Dutch grenadiers. I have the crest that went on their helmets. That’s too much detail for me to paint. However, I can print them very small then, as I understand it, one can varnish them onto their caps. Has…[Read more]

Yes based on the current rules the rifle grenade adaptor is a heavy weapon. I guess some players would like to see the following added (just to make it absolutely clear) in the next Bolt Action errata:
All rifle grenade adaptors/VB launcher entries in all books. Add the following line:
The rifle grenade adaptor/VB Launcher is considered a heavy…[Read more]

I don’t understand where is the problem. Rifle grenade has HE 1″, then use HE rules:
– +1 PEN;
– d2 pins;
– can damage armored vehicle 7+;
– can make exceptional damage on artillery;
– medic doctor cannot cure HE woundsHE (from mortar, artyllery, hand grenade, grenade launcher,…) is heavy weapon.
All rules say this, and there is nowhere in the…[Read more] -

The Rifle Grenade is fired by a small arm but can hardly be classed as a typical small arm amo. Explosive load in HE was normally much less than in a Hand grenade but enough to produce a lot of splinters.
And there also existed hollow charge rounds. Intended against armored vehicles.
So historically a rifle grenade could hurt armored ve…[Read more]

… OR do you have to have all the western books to get rules for a Japanese army?
All 4 books give the same stats and points for RGAs. They just have different descriptive write-ups and allowed numbers for difderent nationalities.
– The Armies of France & Allies (not Battle of France) book referred specifically to the VB Launcher for French…[Read more]

For me is simple.
From rulebook “Heavy weapons add a modifier to the damage roll”. Rifle grenade has HE 1″ rule, then has +1 pen, then is heavy weapon. -

Our club keeps a gap between infantry and other infantry so you can tell squads / teams apart… but yeah we dont bother with the 1″ between vehicles and infantry
