    RN got Higgins boats like PT 88, 90, 92 , 94 and used them as MTB 413 – 423.

The models need some conversion . They are 78′ Higgins but RN used them with 1x 40 mm, 1x 20mm 4x .50 and only 2 Torpedo tubes.

The ELCO boats of RN are earlier 77′ and 70′. Not the 80’Warlord makes.

US Navy used Higgins in Mediteranean and ELCO ones (like PT 505) in Channel 1944

So you can use both types in European fights.

Thank you. The conversions are real fun to do.

I did not play a full game. A friend bought the rules and we will do some conversions to them too.

Next on my painting desk is a 2 x 2cm S-38. And five minutes ago the DHL brought me a Warlord German Minesweeper.

The big order from 20th is unfulfilled with many more ships.

These conversions are spectacular. I just got my sets from Santa and now that I’m starting to assemble the models myself, I’m even more impressed by your work.

Have you had a chance to play yet?

My boat got a scratch built 40mm without shield. Like some it got a wooden bandstand base. And the Abweiser that prevented the gun from hitting boat parts.
I also added the rails for the 2 x 3 depth charges that got carried in ASW and patrol missions.

Most alterations are around the bridge. The Back was longer, covering the side of the torpedo barrel. And the position of the port/starbord markings got added. On top I added the loop of the wireless direction finder, the horn and the prominent rails at the outlook’s position left. And on back the ladder and outlook positions.

I also added the UKW antenna and the fixings for the long distance wireless antennas that lead to a post added to mid of boat. There I added the flagstaff. And a bit of railing for the look.

These pics are intended to show part of the conversions and a comparision with S-100

Yesterday evening I did the first of my S-38 boats.
For that I wanted one of the Schnellboote finished with 40mm Bofors, “found” in France.

The original design of the Entwurf Lürsen 1939/40 had 2 single 20 mm guns. But it was seen in combat 1939/40 that this was not enough to fight the RN MGB. The original tactical idea was against fighting small targets with guns. The valuable Schnellboot was intended to use the torpedoes against valuable targets. First merchant ships and second big warships.

The idea about the 40mm aft was to give the flotilla a rearguard boat that would be last in retreat. Just a few “S-38” got them at shipyard before delivery to the front unit.

S 39, 42,44,45 and 46. These are the boats with 0mm and the open bridge. S-67 was bult with a clear plexi glass Kalotte (For camo, but the reflections made that not working) and from S-68 most (all??) came from the yard with a light metal Kalotte and 67 got one too.

The S-100 had one made of 10-12mm armor steel.

For the historian and gamer the many conversions are a nightmare. The surviving old front boats got converted. But not all.

I now that Warlord has a Forum policy that no other companies stuff should be shown. I’m not sure about scratch built stuff.. But I guess that a model that is a conversion from Warlord stuff is OK ?

Yesterday evening I had just a bit of time and suddenly I had another crazy idea: Convert one of the torpedo marker into a Neger manned Torpedo.

A simple job. I wanted the same basing style I use on other vessels but one can use the cast on one as well. I added the bigger rudder aft and two studs for the hooks used to lift the torpedo. A circular punched out piece of plastic with torpedo diameter is the crewman’s compartment. The plexiglass cupola was made from Bondic. A spar at front for the aiming device – some paint – ready.

(If you don’t know Bondic, it’s a glue that sets glass clear, for setting a mini UV light lamp is used. It sets in seconds. )

    —————
Neger was designed from an electric G7e torpedo converted into a vessel for one man. It carried another G7e below. It could not dive, the cupola stayed on surface.
The vessel went with a speed of 4 – 6 knots and had a range of 30 – 45 nautical miles depending on speed.

Navigation was done with a simple wrist compass and air was provided by a Dräger Tauchretter, an oxygen container normally used by submarine crews in emergency.
Aiming was done by a graduated scale at the dome and a spike at front. Aim, pull a lever and hope that the torpedo will hit. Then turn and try to survive.

Neger was not designed as suicide weapon but odds are against the crewman. In some cases the torpedo failed to release and carried the craft to the enemy. Suffocation was main killer.. Around 80% of the men died!

Some 200 Neger vessels reached the front. Being used from March 1944 on. First mission was 20/21st April against the Anzio landing. 30 Neger went into action. 13 capsized and just 17 operated against the fleet. Three failed to return and none hit a target. One fell into Allied hands.
In Normandie 40 Neger operated from the Seine. 5/6th Juy 24 attacked the Allied landing fleet. They sank the minesweepers HMS Magic and Cato. But just 9 Neger returned.
Next night 21 Neger went into action. But in bright moonlight the cupolas shined. Many got sighted and hunted down by MGB, MTB, other vessels and planes. The Neger managed to sink the minesweeper HMS Pylades and damage the Polish cruiser Dragon that had to be scuttled.

Another possible victim to Neger was the destroyer HMS Qourn that was sunk in combined action (!!) of Schnellboote and human torpedoes.
The trawler HMS Colsay was sunk on 2nd November 44 near Ostend.

The Name Neger was a joke, the idea for the vessel came from Marinebaurat Richard Mohr.

Neger was a bad design. The dome was easy to spot. Only the last version was able to dive for a very short distance to go out of sight. The flotilla tried to use dummy domes to fool the allies away from the vessels but with little success. The original design even lacked the option to open the dome from inside for escape.
In Nazi propaganda logic the use in Normandie paid. The number of lost men and torpedoes used was much below the number of kia Allied seamen and material destroyed. But Kriegsmarine thought better and did not use it post winter 44/45.

Game use is simple. The Neger version most used could not dive and should be used like a surface vessel. It has no guns and the torpedo can be used like an S-Boot one. Any hit would destroy the Neger. 6 knts, normal turning.

Poor Richard. You create a great game and soon lunatic fools start to ….

Thank you . Well, it’s a bit lunatic to do them that way.

My second S-100 Panzerkalottenboot is the version with 1x 2cm at bow, twin 2 cm in mid and 2cm Flakvierling aft.

I decided to do it with mine armament so added the rails and 6 mines. (Small balls from Miliput on square mine anchors).
Mining boats did not carry the spare Torpedoes for weight reasons.

A problem with the kit is that the designer included no twin 2 cm. One can use the lower part of the quadruple with minimal conversion (like I did on first boat) but if you use that in aft position you have a problem. So I scratched a twin 2cm for the second boat.

The game designers did it correct, the data Card has the twin 2cm.

The Schnellboot mine warfare was a standard tactic. It was possible to put the mine more accurate into position than by plane. In the first years with little radar it was done with small risk.

In the 1941/42 mine offensive against Malta the 3rd S-Boot Flotilla laid 557 mines. 133 TMA, 8 LMF, 4 UMA, 196 FMC and 216 UMB. In addition 416 Sperrschutzmittel (Anti mine sweeping explosives) got laid.

Malta was only saved from starvation by the “help” of bad design (and perhaps making) of the TMA anti ship mine. Up to 50% laid before La Valetta exploded minutes after laying. They had a safety device that self destroyed them if the mine anchor was not working correctly. The crews saw with horror that the mines laid with high risk at the harbor entry went “Boom”.

So after some missions they changed to the small Anti submarine mine UMB and River mine FMC. These worked but most ships running on them survived. In the June 42 convoy all ships entering La Valetta got hit but the small mines sank only a Polish Destroyer.

The Flotilla lost 2 S-Boote in these 24 mining raids. S-31 sank on a mine 10.5.42 and S-34 was sunk by coastal artillery. Strangely the RN did not notice the mining done by S-Boote, thinking it be done by planes or submarines. The raids had been teamed with air raids on Malta to disguise the noise from the boats.

The later 1939 mob Minensucher had a different gun shield for the 10,5 cm with higher AA angle and less side protection.

The typical wartime camo of ths class was a false bow wave, painted in White. Dazzle-painting was very rare on the pre M 1940 type boats.
You see it for example on M 107 post conversion to Begleitschiff / HQ ship vor 4. Räumbootlotille.
    There hadd been many conversions.

Yes, those figures are from the Project Z range, apart from the dog which is from a Perry set.
I was pleasantly surprised at how those Project Z plastics painted up, they are much better than I expected.
Its a shame they are not more true multipose but with the price I paid for them I am very happy.
They have so many bits on the sprue I think they will be cropping up on BotGoA conversions for a while. I have already put together a Freeborn in C3 armour and used a Project Z bikers head. He looks pretty cool.

    Hi All,

This has probably been asked already – is there already produced or will there be a conversion to enable BA to be played for WW1..? Esp the early days of WW1 and the fast flowing advances and retreats of 1914..?

    Nice conversion!

I found the metal musketeers add variety to a unit. I’m not much good at converting miniatures.

I love converting the plastics. I agree with the concept of providing a sprue with sufficient flexibility. I.e. some with some without.
The all bayonet thing is problematic and despite Dr Dave’s love of all things ‘they don’t like it up em’ they are a pain in the a…. (no pun intended) and affect shooting accuracy ( especially the dirty great big ones of that period)
That having all been said. Our hosts are not about to recut a couple of brand new sprues!
As I said I love plastics for the conversions and let’s be fair the amount of spares you get do mean that any self respecting collector of the armies of one nation will have lots of bits to achieve the look they want.

the out of scale rifles – this is down to the fact that the figures are heroic 28mm scale and the UC is 1/56. I have tried to stay within the realms of the keeping the model from the BA range. I have used minimal spares from the box hence why the rifles are too long. Hopefully it Does not detract from the finished article. But I will not complain as I am a big fan of the first generation BA figure kits and the versatility that they offer for conversions sadly lacking in the more recent releases.

    Wow!
The paint job is stunning and the conversion is awesome.

    Congratulations.
