Thanks very much for the link. They do look very good missions – very well balanced. After the club’s current Market Garden campaign is over we can give them a try.

My best advice is to find a wargaming club where members know fun is more important than winning. BTW we have a club rule that stops snipers killing teams – snipers can only kill humans. If they kill the whole team then that is fine, but Exceptional damage can’t kill the equipment the team are using. We have quite a few other club rules too, wh…[Read more]

Fantastic battle report. I do like the idea of 500 point armies – it really limits what you can take and gives a quick and fun game. I also really liked the terrain, especially the buildings – scratch built?

Paul Nettle replied to the topic German horse drawn limbers in the forum Bolt Action 4 months, 1 week ago
Ebay is a good resource. I found a two and four horse limber on there, and the manufacturer was happy to give me two spare horses to make a six horse limber. These are all 3D prints and so are pretty cheap (£9.99 for the two horse limber).

Errata, if up to date, trumps rules in the books. Errate is supposed to update rules.

Thanks Gents. Well, my solo campaign was due to lockdown in the UK. The early battles were solo, now the battles are multi-player battles. Depending on forces, two, three or four players can play each battle. Battle 14 in my campaign is due tomorrow at my wargames club – me taking the Romanians against Bob and Phil doing the Soviets. Losse…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Luftwaffe field division in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 1 week ago
I am not as expert, but from late 1943 the Luftwaffe Field Divisions were taken over by the Heer, so should be equiped like the German Grenadiers. Most fought on the Eastern Front of course.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Italian ss squads in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 2 weeks ago
It is up to you really. As they were in German units I would treat them as normal SS units. Given they were recruited from former Fascists I think that Fanatics may be appropriate. Also, they were recruited after Italy had surrendered – and formed for the the Italian Socialist Republic so Italian rules may no longer be appropriate.

During the first UK lockdown I started a 1941 solo Eastern Front campaign. During the campaign my armies expanded – a lot, giving me lots of painting to do.
Now lockdown is over the games are played at the club or just with friends – and I think the campaign is just about over. After 24 turns and 12 battles, the camapign is stutting to a ha…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Still not clarified: rules for the DAK Aufklärungsgruppen in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 4 weeks ago
I agree the wording is confusing, easpcially the use of “unit”. “This unit can be taken as an armoured car choice”. “Every unit … must be of the same experience level”.
I know this is just down to opinion but I reckon five order dice are correct.
But then army lists from this book are a bit bonkers. My standard DAK platoon has five tanks in…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Minefields (How to allocate wounds on a Infantry squad) in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 4 weeks ago
I also found this somewhat open to interpretation. My groups plays it as: a 10 man squad of veterans crosses a minefield – I roll 10 dice and those that come up as a 5+ are hits. I know this is not as written in the rules, but this is the way that makes the most sense to my wargames group.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic painting Indian troops in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 4 weeks ago
If you want some good reference books, the first two autobiography books by John Masters are good. “Bugles and a Tiger” is about his life in the British Indian army before WWII (as a 2nd Lt in charge of a rifle company), and “The Road Past Mandalay” describes his was service. Both very good books.

As far as I know, all turbans were the same. It would be bad practice to identify officers and NCOs to the enemy by such obvious markings.
Indian units in 1939 were well on the way to being “Indianised”. Of the 31 Officers, 12 were King’s Commissioned Officers (British) and 19 were Viceroy’s Commissioned Officers (the ratio could vary in p…[Read more]

Thank you, Invisible Officer, for this very useful information. As I said before, trying to get 12 men into the Kleiner Floßsack would be fun to see. I have purchase some Großer Floßsack in 1:56 scale to make a pontoon bridge, and also bought some smaller wooden boats in 1:56 to do the same for my Romanians.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Flossacke in the forum Bolt Action 9 months, 3 weeks ago
Thanks Nat – both have DV 3+.
But having seen the pictures of the boats I think the rules are wrong. In my campaign the boats will be:
Schlaughboot 3M – max of 6 men so make it much cheaper.
Schluchboot 5.5m – 12 men plus 1 MMG, or 8 men plus 1 Light AT Gun – no way did the AT gun crew take up all the boat.
Plus the Soviet A3 inflatable boat…[Read more]

Thank you for the swift response. I have both those books but missed the boats in them.
Schlauchboot is a general term covering a lot of light craft, so I guess the 3M one is the Kleiner Flossacke and the 5.5M one the Grosse Flossacke. I would love to see 12 men trying to get into a Kleiner Flossacke! Six seems a crowd.
They still seem ex…[Read more]
