Paul Nettle replied to the topic Free French army in Indochina in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 1 week ago
Wasn’t French Indochina under Vichy control until March 1945 (when it came under Japanese control)? So I didn’t realise there was much Free french activity there. BTW, Perry Miniatures make a range of French WWII colonial figures with varients for Free french or Vichy French. These are mainly in desert uniforms though.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Question: Bombardament preparatory in the forum Bolt Action 5 months, 2 weeks ago
Yes, a very daft rule which my club has a special rule for. If hit by a preliminary bombardment on a “6” we use the heavy howitzer template so any one under the template is hit with a 3+ pen. If a squad is hit by a heavy howitzer shell it seems daft that only one person is hit.
It is the same daft rule with minefields. Ten veterans adv…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic "Tank" Platoon full of of Motorcycle with Machine-gun Sidecar? in the forum Bolt Action 9 months ago
I run a “tank” platoon of four BMWs with sidecars as a “Recce” platoon. In the campaign system I run they don’t have to fear tanks becuase they can retreat without a fight.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Driel mission -market Garden in the forum Bolt Action 10 months, 1 week ago
This is a poorly written scenario. I think the victory conditions are a misprint – it must mean the western edge. Also, on Turn One I guess the Germans enter on the southern or eastern edge, like they do on Turn 3? But it is not clear at all. Best to just agree it with your opponent.

Thanks very much for the link. They do look very good missions – very well balanced. After the club’s current Market Garden campaign is over we can give them a try.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Struggling with play/stratagems in the forum Bolt Action 10 months, 3 weeks ago
My best advice is to find a wargaming club where members know fun is more important than winning. BTW we have a club rule that stops snipers killing teams – snipers can only kill humans. If they kill the whole team then that is fine, but Exceptional damage can’t kill the equipment the team are using. We have quite a few other club rules too, wh…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Belgians vs German Battle Report in the forum Bolt Action 1 year ago
Fantastic battle report. I do like the idea of 500 point armies – it really limits what you can take and gives a quick and fun game. I also really liked the terrain, especially the buildings – scratch built?

Paul Nettle replied to the topic German horse drawn limbers in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 2 months ago
Ebay is a good resource. I found a two and four horse limber on there, and the manufacturer was happy to give me two spare horses to make a six horse limber. These are all 3D prints and so are pretty cheap (£9.99 for the two horse limber).

Errata, if up to date, trumps rules in the books. Errate is supposed to update rules.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Does anyone else enjoy campaigns? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 3 months ago
Thanks Gents. Well, my solo campaign was due to lockdown in the UK. The early battles were solo, now the battles are multi-player battles. Depending on forces, two, three or four players can play each battle. Battle 14 in my campaign is due tomorrow at my wargames club – me taking the Romanians against Bob and Phil doing the Soviets. Losse…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Luftwaffe field division in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 3 months ago
I am not as expert, but from late 1943 the Luftwaffe Field Divisions were taken over by the Heer, so should be equiped like the German Grenadiers. Most fought on the Eastern Front of course.

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Italian ss squads in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 3 months ago
It is up to you really. As they were in German units I would treat them as normal SS units. Given they were recruited from former Fascists I think that Fanatics may be appropriate. Also, they were recruited after Italy had surrendered – and formed for the the Italian Socialist Republic so Italian rules may no longer be appropriate.

During the first UK lockdown I started a 1941 solo Eastern Front campaign. During the campaign my armies expanded – a lot, giving me lots of painting to do.
Now lockdown is over the games are played at the club or just with friends – and I think the campaign is just about over. After 24 turns and 12 battles, the camapign is stutting to a ha…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Still not clarified: rules for the DAK Aufklärungsgruppen in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 4 months ago
I agree the wording is confusing, easpcially the use of “unit”. “This unit can be taken as an armoured car choice”. “Every unit … must be of the same experience level”.
I know this is just down to opinion but I reckon five order dice are correct.
But then army lists from this book are a bit bonkers. My standard DAK platoon has five tanks in…[Read more]

Paul Nettle replied to the topic Minefields (How to allocate wounds on a Infantry squad) in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 4 months ago
I also found this somewhat open to interpretation. My groups plays it as: a 10 man squad of veterans crosses a minefield – I roll 10 dice and those that come up as a 5+ are hits. I know this is not as written in the rules, but this is the way that makes the most sense to my wargames group.
