Rather then starting a new newbie topic i spotted your response by searching for “recce transport”
So am I understanding it right that Recce platoons can use normal transports and not special recce ones?

“Weapons cannot be fired indirectly by a unit that was in Ambush that turn – indirect fire takes time”.  Nothing stops you putting your mortar in ambush, but you can’t do anything with it FROM ambush (except go Down if shot at).

Can mortars go on ambush? Can spotters trigger than firing if on ambush?

No, but the answer to your question is on page 101. Also have a look at Spotters on page 102.

At the end of the option to take additional men is “…alternatively, a Captain or Major may be mounted on a horse for +5 pts, getting the cavalry special rule (see p89).”

You can do one or the other, not both, so if he’s taken additional men, no horse.  If he takes the horse, no additional men.
