The lessons learned during the harsh Russian winters hardened the regular German army (Heer) into a highly effective combat force with a core of veteran men to pass on valuable experienced to the many new recruits needed as the war headed to its final conclusion.
By the winter of 1944, their forces were well equipped and prepared for one of the harshest European winters on record. German Heer troops, now renamed as Grenadiers to improve morale, were certainly a dangerous foe to contend with during the battles in the Hurtgen forest and Ardennes – now known as The Battle of the Bulge.
