Main gun vs co-axial mg

How often do you find yourselves using the main gun of a tank to target infantry? My preference is to put an HE shell into a squad to maximize pins so long as the hit roll is 4’s or better, if it’s 5’s I’ll only use it to complement the hull machine gun, and I’ll switch to coax on 6’s.
How do you guys tend to approach this? Does the size of the gun influence your approach?July 27, 2020 at 6:43 am #180157SteveTParticipant
As most main guns roll only one die, difficult shots that need, say, a 6 or 7, are most likely to achieve nothing. However, when are rolling 5 MG dice, you clearly have much higher chance of achieving something vs those hard-to-hit targets. And that pin may be all you need to shut the enemy down or even force a rout/morale check.July 27, 2020 at 1:08 pm #180166LordRaoParticipant
As SteveT wrote, MMGs spread the risks/increase chancing of doing something minor rather than nothing.
To answer your other question, size of the gun doesn’t factor here, imo, as its chances to hit are the same (disregarding range, obviously).July 27, 2020 at 5:41 pm #180171Jacob CarterParticipant
I agree only when it comes to sixes, yet I believe the rewards of getting a hit with a heavy or super heavy AT gun outweighs the risk of missing.
If you’re shooting at a veteran squad with the MMG on 5’s; odds are you’ll get ~2 hits and maybe a causality, however with a super heavy gun you could cause D3 pins, hit at least half the squad, and be wounding on 2’s. The risk seems worth it to me since you could effectively eliminate an entire squad vs causing a minor inconvenience.July 28, 2020 at 2:02 am #180175SteveTParticipant
Yes of course in most cases it is better to use the main gun. Makes sense–it is the main gun! But if you really NEED suppression in some particular situations, then the MG will give you want you want.
Remember also if your tank has any pins, then needing a 6s or 7s will rapidly become a reality. So again the MMG might be worth it.
There are also a few outlying cases I’ve found where MG is better such as when the target area is crowded with friendly targets and a big HE burst isn’t an option , and also shooting at stuff in bunkers in which small arms fire has a chance of achieving something concrete (bad pun intended). There are probably many more.September 14, 2020 at 11:49 am #181578Janos900Participant
We use the main gun against infantry in bulidings.
