TomParticipantThere is plenty of documented evidence of the PIAT being used as regular mortar as well as an anti-tank solution, with the attached picture showing a British soldier demonstrating the correct method of utilising the PIAT in this manor. Note the white stripe down the spine of the weapon, this was used as a rough aiming guide for indirect fire.
In game, this would obviously require a points increase by a minimum of 20 or 25 pts (please leave your own suggestions) and it’s own indirect fire profile could potentially look something like this:
Weapon Type Range Shots Pen Special Rules PIAT Anti-Tank Direct – 12” Indirect – 12-30”
1 +5 Team, Shaped Charge, HE (1”) I will trial this change soon (hopefully) but in the mean time feel free to take this idea and apply it to your own games and share how you it worked or if you feel like it need tweaking somehow

ParticipantInteresting. I am not sure the “indirect” fire really works. Are spotters really calling in fire to Piat teams?
Instead, it seems like you just want to fire at targets over 12″ range up to 30″ range and treat it as a HE (1″) indirect fire shot when it comes to damage.

Donald LinnParticipantI agree- the Piat was often used as an impromptu mortar.

ParticipantThere is no need for a spotter to fire indirect. With a line of sight indirect fire can be useful to shoot over friendly troops. No spotter needed for that. Also handy to shoot at opponents hiding behing a wall or something like that. It would negate the save roll.

NatParticipantTheres a couple of issues here…
1 – indirect rule allows the use of spotters.. which isnt really historical
2 – it wasnt that accurate
3 – BA isnt the most accurate game – either weapons, tactics or history4 – slot / unit compition within an army list – they removed medium mortars from the rifle pltn and let light mortars so that ther was a place from them in game – this would remove that place (with the exception of the paras who can take light mortars in their squads)
TLDR – BA is a nod to history, not fully historical – theres a number of decissions which are made for gameplay or even rule of cool… its a bit madaning trying to work out which rule is which though!
