Break test in combat

    Very new to the game, but not sure of when to take a break test. So when I take say   4 casualties, my opponent takes 1 in first round of hand to hand combat, do I subtract one from the other and take a Break test now, or do break test only kick in when I have reached my limit of stamina say 5. It just seems if I take a test in first round I could end up being removed from the board if I have a poor roll!

    I am guessing this is a Hail Ceasar question, not a Bolt Action question?
