When you buy an extra close combat weapon for a unit, it isn’t a downgrade but an upgrade as it gives you the choice of using both those weapons or one and a shield. In the Gaul’s case, then, all you’re paying for by taking the short spear is an extra weapon to allow for dual-weapon attack. In the German’s case, on the other hand, if you buy him an axe you’re purchasing both the option to fight with two weapons and also the Lethal 1 special rule from the axe.

Similarly, for the Gaul horseman, when you buy a sword you’re giving him the option to fight with two weapons, as well as the Parry special rule from the sword.

    Hope that helps.

I found this great map of Ancient Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa based upon the classic game Rome Total War not long ago, with all the territories and settlements from the game:

Thanks for your answer Tim! Glad you agree with my assumptions.

My only concern is with the idea of special characters being taken like Mercenaries – it makes sense when your own faction is in your faction’s Mercenary list like Britons, but what happens in the case of Romans, for example, who can only take mercenaries from Gaul, Britain, Iberia and some from units the Mercenary units list?

Hello everyone, I’m Caratacus and have just started learning how to play SPQR.

For a long time I’ve been a player of Warhammer Fantasy, 40K (5th and 6th Editions) and the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game, but am now taking my first steps into Warlord’s historical games having recently discovered a couple of model shops not too far from where I live (near Southampton) that stock Hail Caesar and SPQR minis.

I’m a big fan of ancient history (especially the Roman Invasions of Britain, hence my profile name) and am so pleased to have finally got my hands on some of Warlord’s great quality and affordable plastics. Will be building up Ancient British and Imperial Roman warbands for SPQR to begin with, as that requires far fewer models to start with, and will probably expand into Hail Caesar in the future!

I look forward to delving into the archives of wisdom this forum has amassed!
