If you are looking to do a *fun* battle report with a heavy focus on air support, the FAO rules are a pretty poor abstraction overall.

Warlord actually released an unofficial supplement to use actual war planes in Bolt Action games. http://www.warlordgames.com/rules-warplanes-in-bolt-action/

If you have the models and want to make your game look pretty with lots of planes swooping around, I would definitely recommend using these rules. Instead of randomly determining what these various planes are, you could actually field a Mustang or a Thunderbolt
