The wording on the Clemson card indicates that it’s a specific configuration – Destroyer (Escort). The card also indicates that there are other Clemson configurations available at http://www.victoryatsea.co.uk

That particular web address does take you to a working website, though at the moment the only Victory At Sea content is advertising for the…[Read more]

  • The rules say that the smoke counter is placed “behind” the ship. I read that as “the back of the stern”.

Aircraft attacks work differently than ship attacks. They don’t draw a line of sight. Instead, they’re placed in base to base contact with their target. Assuming that smoke works against aircraft (and I’m not certain that it even should),…[Read more]

I don’t have a pre-existing ship collection.  But I do have a Portland and Myoko – both 1/1800 – that I got from Shapeways late last year (the intent was to use them in a different naval game; but nothing happened for reasons).  It seems to be a popular scale for WW2 ships on that sales platform.  Fireforge was also showing off a planned line of…[Read more]

  • I’m hoping that the full rules will allow for the historical anti-torpedo tactic of turning away.  It’s something that big ships did historically when the torpedoes were spotted in time, and it puts commanders into a “risk the ship or risk the formation?” situation.  As an historical example, Yamato was forced to turn away due to a torpedo a…[Read more]

Or to provide another example, the Mid-War Monsters for Flames of War. Battlefront wanted to cater to players who might be interested in hypothetical “what if?” armored vehicles during the Mid-War period. But the result was unpopular with the general player base, and could possibly have turned into a disaster if the models had been placed in…[Read more]

There’s a card for the B-17 included in the American card pack. Warlord doesn’t currently produce a B-17 model, and there’s been no word on if or when they might make such a thing. But it shouldn’t be hard to find a model in the appropriate scale from a third-party company. Pairing one or more of those with the card in the American card pack…[Read more]

Poor decision, imo. It’s inevitable that the “what-ifs” would show up. You’re going to have German players who want Graf Zeppelin, for instance, and are going to put her in the game one way or another. So Warlord will eventually release the models for those ships. And I won’t knock them for doing that. They’re catering to the customers in…[Read more]

  • “So your saying ignore the dogfight completely?”

I’m saying play it as written. AA can’t shoot into the dogfight, bombers make their attacks, and then probably get savaged by the fighters afterwards (but might actually win if they get lucky with the die rolls – particularly if the “bombers” in question are F4U Corsairs).

    As justification for…[Read more]

  • The rules are pretty clear about not being able to fire into a dogfight. While I’m a bit dubious about how historical that was (anti-aircraft gunners were unlikely to take the time to note whether there was a friendly fighter tailing a bomber that was in a dive), that’s the rule.

There’s nothing that says that a bomber can’t attack a ship while…[Read more]

  • Battleships also have batteries of light guns that can be used against fast, agile targets such as destroyers. However, a battleship that gets close enough to a destroyer to use its light guns is also very close to being in range of the destroyer’s torpedoes.

  • On this general topic, I was reading about the USS Edsall earlier today. The Edsall was a USN destroyer that was part of the ill-fated ADBA Fleet, during the Japanese rampage through the Pacific. Edsall attempted to come to the rescue of a friendly transport that had been attacked by two IJN battlecruisers (Kirishima and Hiei) and two IJN…[Read more]

  • Answers!  I’m copying my exchange with Matt over at Dakka.

USS Idaho in her default configuration has a set of 5″, 360 degree guns with 6 attack dice that are both DP and Restricted. She’s being approached by a flight of Kates on her starboard side, a flight of Vals on her port side, and a flight of Zeroes from her bow. Her priority is to…

  • You’re right.  Bad reading of the rules on my part.

Having looked through the relevant sections again, and having looked at the ship cards, I’m initially inclined to agree.  The “Restricted” trait only applies to shots fired at targets port and starboard, but not to shots fired at targets fore and aft.  Given that all of the Restricted we…[Read more]

  • Anti-aircraft fire ignores firing arcs, so far as I can tell (which makes a certain amount of sense, given how aircraft maneuver in real life in comparison to the ships that they’re attacking).  Given that, I would be inclined to ignore the Restricted rule when calculating the number of anti-aircraft dice from DP weapons.  However, I would still a…[Read more]

  • Submersibles aren’t in the rules at this time, so there’s not much point in giving observation aircraft the depth charge trait.

The primary author of the rules has been posting over at the DakkaDakka forum since early this year under the name “MongooseMatt” (he’s the one that first made me aware of this release).  Between items like the depth…[Read more]

  • Just got e-mailed a shipping notification a few hours ago.  Looks like I should have it within a couple of weeks!

  • The release date is next Saturday (29th) and has been known for at least a month…there has been a count down timer on the 2 player box for at least 3 weeks…

Interesting.  It would have been nice if Warlord had published that somewhere else – say, on their Facebook page, or one of the articles on the website that the Facebook page has been link…[Read more]

  • According to the Facebook page in early August, release for the starter boxes was supposed to be the end of August, and possibly even sooner.

However, it’s now the 21st, and there still hasn’t been an announcement of the release date.

  • What is it?

‘A Touch of Green’ is a Mandarin-language series from The Republic of China (Taiwan) currently airing on Netflix (at least in the US), based on a short story written in 1971.  The series ads focus on the aviators, who are part of the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) following the end of World War 2.  The unit is flying P-51s (the N…[Read more]
