Frostgrave- Fantasy Wargames In The Frozen City

Frostgrave - Fantasy Wargames In The Frozen City

Amidst the frozen ruins of an ancient city, wizards battle in the hopes of discovering the treasures of a fallen empire. In this fantasy skirmish wargame, each player takes on the role of a wizard from one of ten schools of magic, and builds his band of followers. The wizard’s apprentice will usually accompany his master, and more than a dozen other henchman types are available for hire, from lowly thugs to heavily armoured knights and stealthy thieves. Wizards can expand their magical knowledge by unlocking ancient secrets and may learn up to 80 different spells. While individual games of Frostgrave are quick and can easily be played in an hour or two, it is by connecting them into an ongoing campaign that players will find the most enjoyment. The scenarios given in the book are merely the beginning of the limitless adventures that can be found amidst the ruins of the Frozen City.

Chronomancer & Apprentice

Chronomancer & Apprentice

Potentially the most powerful of all wizards, Chronomancers use magic to manipulate time itself. As the youngest branch of magic, it is less developed, and less understood than any of the others, and is thus potentially more dangerous. Chronomancers tend to be gamblers and risk-takers, those who prefer a quick path to power. Chronomancers have no specific style of dress, although they tend to like outfits that project a sense of power, and often carry a large sword or other intimidating weapon, even if they have little skill in wielding it. It is not uncommon for some parts of a Chronomancer’s body to appear older than other parts. In some cases, they will even have one side of their face looking much older than the other side.

Elementalist & Apprentice

Elementalist & Apprentice

Elementalists are the most outwardly powerful type of wizard. Their magic is centred around controlling the four elements, usually in loud, explosive, and unsubtle ways. Their clothes tend to feature one bold colour, and they are more prone to flashy decorations than other wizards – facial tattoos are not uncommon. Most Elementalists, especially those that specialize in the control of fire, tend to have short tempers. While Fire Elementalists may specialize in Fire magic, he or she is more than capable of harnessing the powers of Water, Wind or Earth, should it be necessary.

Enchanter & Apprentice

Enchanter & Apprentice

Enchanters are hands-on wizards, who work their magic by implanting it in objects or people. Many Enchanters are also craftsmen, such as carpenters or sculptors, who work their magic into the pieces they create. In appearance, Enchanters are often the least ‘wizardly’ looking of all spellcasters, being just as likely to carry craftsman’s tools as they are weapons or magical items.

Illusionist & Apprentice

Illusionist & Apprentice

Some times taunted for being mere stage magicians, an experienced Illusionist can be a dangerous foe. Illusionists use magic to fool the senses, to cause confusion and fear, and to convince people of things that aren’t true. In dress, Illusionists are usually colourful, preferring bright, multi-coloured robes, cloaks and hats. Illusionists rarely wear weapons or other magical equipment openly, preferring to produce these items out of thin air whenever they are needed.

Necromancer & Apprentice

Necromancer & Apprentice

Necromancers study the magic and spells associated with death, as well as the creation and control of undead creatures such as zombies and animated skeletons. They generally wear dark colours (most commonly black), and tend to have a sickly, unhealthy appearance. While necromancers are not necessarily evil, there are few that have delved deeply into this school of magic without giving in to its corrupting influence.

Sigilist & Apprentice

Sigilist & Apprentice

Sigilists work magic through reading and writing. They are the masters of languages, both living and dead, and can see the magical patterns in writing of all types. Most famously, they are the writers of magical scrolls and books, which allow mystical energy to be saved within writing for use later. In appearance, Sigilists tend to be physically weaker, bookish, wizards. They tend to not carry any weapons other than a wand or staff, but often end up loaded down with books and scrolls.

Soothsayer & Apprentice

Soothsayer & Apprentice

The subtle magic of a Soothsayer allows the wizard to expand his senses outside of his body, including through time itself. They can reach into the past to learn the secrets of history, or they can look into the future and try to catch a glimpse of things to come. There are very few young Soothsayers. Something about the patience and concentration required favours the old. Soothsayers are most easily recognizable by their eyes, which are almost always very pale, and often posses a somewhat empty stare. Because Soothsayers often collect items of clothing with interesting past histories, they tend to wear an odd mix of clothing and equipment; a Soothsayer sees nothing odd about wearing an expensive and stylish cloak over worn and badly stained robes, or having an old seashell hanging on a leather strap right next to a priceless emerald.

Summoner & Apprentice

Summoner & Apprentice

Summoners work their magic by opening doorways to different planes of existence. Usually this is to bring forth creatures from these other planes to use as servants, although there are other ways to use this power. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the term ‘demon’ refers to any being from another plane of existence. Demons are not all necessarily evil, nor do they all have horns or hooves. That said, demons are not usually happy about being summoned, and the life of a Summoner is a dangerous one.

Thaumaturge & Apprentice

Thaumaturge & Apprentice

Thaumaturges draw their magical powers from positive energy. Most, though not all, believe this energy comes from some form of deity. These wizards are healers and protectors, who often spend as much time on good works as they do on the study of magic. Thamaturges rarely openly carry any weapon other than a staff and some find even that a bit aggressive. This is not to say that Thaumaturges are pacifists, they just prefer to not rely on obvious displays of force. In appearance, they tend to wear plain, simple robes, usually of a light colour. They tend to favour hoods over hats, and wood and leather over gold and silk.

Witch & Apprentice

Witch & Apprentice

Witches draw on the subtle powers of nature for their magic, and specialize in the brewing of potions, casting of curses, and seeking aid from plants and animals. Despite popular thought, most witches are not old, ugly women, but are just as likely to be of any age and either gender. Witches do tend to be hoarders, and always carry around a bag (or several bags) to collect various ingredients – bits of mistletoe, insects (live or otherwise), oddly shaped rocks etc.

Imp Demon & Minor Demon

Imp Demon & Minor Demon

Demon is actually the more common term for ‘extra-planner entity’, that is a being that comes from another dimension or plane of existence. Few of the demons in Frostgrave have come of their own free will or for their own purpose; most have been ‘summoned’ by ancient wizards and imprisoned in some form. Demons are not necessarily evil, though few are friendly towards humanity, and most are pretty unhappy about being pulled away from their own existence.

Small & Medium Construct

Small & Medium Construct

Constructs are artificially created objects that have been imbued with a magical semblance of life. Most commonly they are made in the shape of humans and in such cases are generally called golems. That said, constructs can be of any form. In the glory days of the city, creating a living construct out of ordinary household furniture was quite popular.

Golems and other constructs can theoretically be created out of any material. Wood, metal, and clay are the most common as they are the easiest to work with, but constructs made of stone, bone, plants, and even paper are all possible. For game purposes, the actual material used is irrelevant.
