Turn and Shoot Quandry

The Cruel Seas rules say that you can turn and/or shoot each time you have moved one third of your maximum movement. What is not at all clear with whether Shooting and Turning must occur in a certain order.
We have been turning first, then shooting, but recently a situation came up where turning would have caused the target ship to go out of the player’s ship’s gun arc, so the player wanted to shoot first.
How do people play this? Shoot, turn? Turn, shoot? Player’s choice?

I would turn then shoot.
Reason for this is that the first paragraph under turning says ‘during their move, each vessel can make either a red or yellow turn once, after each speed level moved.
Where it says allocate targets to guns, it says ‘your ship may fire at any point in the activation when it’s allowed to turn (ie. After completing any third of their full speed), or at any point if stationary’.
The move and turn are part of the movement step and the gun shooting is the firing step. It makes sense to me that you finish one then the other as the turn would be a part of that particular third movement.
Does that make sense?1+December 10, 2019 at 2:34 am #172453Chris SalanderParticipant
That does make sense. That is what we had been doing. But then there was a chance to get a shot if the order was reversed. It created an incentive to question the practice. Thanks.
