    Greetings from Germany.

Unfortunately, no pirate rules are in the book. Are there any rules for pirates or are there any?

    Wie gehts, Halvarson?

Black Seas is focused on the period after the golden age of pirates and before the rise of desperate Somalis in the Indian Ocean. However, my son constantly wants to play pirates and so invariably one of the ships is a privateer.

I have found that an inexperienced, “up-gunned” large merchant ship is ideal as a pirate ship. I used a third-rate, reduced the number of guns and changed the mast configuration. It just needed a shabby, unnavy-like paint scheme…
    …and a Jolly Roger. Obviously.

    Enjoy.

As stated by the Captain the time of the Western pirates was nearly gone.
Those of Northern Africa used Xebecs and small frigates.
And in Red Sea we have mostly Dows and similar small vessels.

But Western pirates used small vessels too, fast, cheap. Small crews.
Late Western Pirates are mostly psychologic ill persons, not poor that fought for freedom. And they gained little. Like those that took the merchant Brig Washington in 1822. They took 16 Dollars, the potatoes and kitchen stuff, a trumpet and most of the clothing of the Crew.

A parody that would be funny but most had been sadistic murderers, like Charles Gibbs that liked to hack his victims to death or to burn ships with the crew. Rape and torture had been normal, nothing glorious to say about the real pirates.

Far away from Jack Sparrow in Cinema. 😉

Maimly US ships fell victim, in 1820 alone 27 in Atlantic and Caribean Waters. Commodore Porter ended the Terror in a Long campaign in 1823.

Later ones in the 1830s, like De Soto or Pedro Gilbert, ended on land, found and hanged. No glamorous last fight.
