Nah, don’t think that Aidan. Every army has its strengths and weaknesses. Work with your Americans. Try different stuff. Get ahold of the Armies of the United States book and look for things that catch your eye. I just picked up a 3D print of a US M15 halftrack. It’s a self-propelled AA platform, with a heavy autocannon linked with two HMGs.…[Read more]

Yeah, a Veteran German HQ unit with either SMGs or STGs can be a real help when things get dicey….

Howdy Aidan!
The big German armored cars; Sdkfz 231 6-rads and 8-rads, Sdkfz 234/1/2 and 3 all have a special ability called “Dual Directional Steering”. They have a driver facing both forwards AND backwards in the vehicle, with dual controls. So if they have to recce out of trouble, they get a full movement in reverse….
Ursus infantry are a…[Read more]

Thanks L.T. Russel!
Yeah from what I’ve seen, the “2 or 3 man officer team” debate is about as old as time. And it looks like there isn’t a correct answer, it depends. I personally am running my LT as a 2 man team, because his purpose is to sit back and provide morale boosts and extra pins. So adding an extra man isn’t worth it as much, the…[Read more]

WHAT?!?!?!? Man how did I not know this? I’ve been digging around for months now, sifting through Youtube videos, and lurking around forums, and there’s not been one mention of the Yubari. I stand corrected lol, maybe this is a sign that I should finally get the $55 dollar rulebook….. Although I think that money would be better spent, i’m trying…[Read more]

A wash is just a thinned out pigment (can be purpose bought or DIY) . Also known as an ink in some corners. These are brushed on generously so that the pigment settles into the crevices to form a natural shading.
Your best bet is to search on YouTube “Painting 28mm xyz” as there will be 999 people talking about painting very precise troop types…[Read more]

Yubari is amazing and probably the best of the IJN’s ultralight cruisers (although the others are also very good and frequently underestimated).
7″ Agile move with 2+ armor and light guns makes her an utter terror as a DD leader / killer. Also, she can be followed by 2-3 Long Lance destroyers for a torpedo run on enemy capitals and suffer the…[Read more]

So…. No V3 is a reset to stop the 101 books per army syndrome.
You’ll get the rulebook which will include a get you by list for the major nations (minor ones getting a free PDF on release). Then you’ll get an ‘armies of…..’ book released with Germany being first in line q1 next year.
These armies of… Books will bring all the units…[Read more]

Howdy Gents, THANKS for your replies!
Stuart, Aidan, thanks for the info! Between the multiple campaign books, Armies of books, Version 1, 2 and now 3, errata, etc, etc, I worry that Bolt Action is becoming like Warhammer….ya gotta buy half a dozen $50 rulebooks just to play a basic game….

Oh I see lol! That’s gotta be interesting to watch. Wait, Chaffees get half speed reverse moves, but the German armored cars don’t? That’s interesting. Also what’s Russian Ursus infantry? In theory, since AT grenades are represented by Molotov Cocktails, you should be able to use the against infantry somehow….

Another consideration; “Small Unit” defensive adjustment. The medic, even with one helper is a “Small” unit. Same with your LT, of whatever kind, with only one assistant. Gets you an extra defensive bonus….

Hahaha! Nah, it usually ends up being stuff like me thinking outside the box and wanting to know why I CAN’T use antitank grenades against Russian Ursus infantry or that NO, his Chaffee doesn’t get a full backwards recce move ’cause it doesn’t have two drivers, like the big German 8-wheeled armored cars. I advocate common sense and reality, h…[Read more]

I also have another major challenge to consider: painting. Now I’ve seen some wizard painters who paint up platoons that look like they just came off the beaches of Normandy, but I have zero miniature painting experience, or even painting in general. So Iv’e decided to start simple, as any paint on a mini is better than none, and sort of figure…[Read more]

I was browsing army lists the other day, and IIRC one of the Panzer III variants can use 2 coaxial MMGs.
And I’ve seen a few people talk about how the Panzer III is like a German Stuart now, with 18 shots…

Aidan replied to the topic Need help making my first bolt action army in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 12 months ago
Yeah I made my list flexible, so I’ll just have to play a few games then tweak it.
If I ditch the assistants, I can upgrade to a heavy for 15 points. And I see your point, a 3″ HE template that kills vets on 2+ or hits armored vehicles with 4 pen, anywhere on the map with 5 feet of range….
