28mm WWI

Postby Correus » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:06 am

Anyone out there gaming WWI in 28mm?

I'm trying to locate some sample minis. Do any of you have any spare minis you'd be willing to part with? I'd like to find at least 1 British, 1 French and 1 German infantryman in a standard pose.

PM me if you do.

Thanks!

You can find interesting minis on Scarabminiatures.com. Are all minis on WWI.
Cheers,

I'll second this! There's no contest, really. I don't play WW1 but some of these are useful for VBCW. Although, Reiver Castings are worth a look as well.

I've decided to go with GWM for the brunt of the minis, but plan on getting a handful of specialty minis from other companies. This is going to be hard for me to do because I prefer to stick with one company's line for a specific period/army - example, I will only buy WG Romans and no other. :D

Since my primary interest (I'm a collector and had family and friends who fought there) is the Western Front that is what I'll game, so a company like Woodbine is out for now. I'll also limit myself to the last half for now, but plan on doing the early war as well.

One thing that stymies me is late war French... I find it odd that GWM didn't produce a range of late war French. I've noticed that, along with late war French, there are a lot of holes in the GWM line. For example, they have early war British Limbers and Ammunition Wagons, but non for the Germans or the French and there are no limber, or caisson, crews , for the late war at all! There is also no artillery of any kind for the US forces either.

Has GWM gone out of business, as in producing new miniature sculpts, and only produce what has already been sculpted?

For the french I will probably go with Scarab, but have been told Brigade is good but heard that Forgotten And Glorious Company of Art late war French are the best (supposedly their rendition of the Adriatic helmet is the best). However, I have no idea how these compare, size wise, to the GWM figures. :?

I did find out the OG WWI minis mix well with GWM so that could help fill some of the gaps.

What bothers me most is something Mikeland brought up.... What if WG is planning a range!?!?! I would hate to invest all this money ($13.75 for a pack of 6) only to have them come out with a better range!!!!

At least the forces are rather small.... If using Warhammer The Great War rules, you will only need between 20 - 100 (maybe 150) per side.

For those of you who DO game WWI I'd suggest you go check out this blog: http://sidneyroundwood.blogspot.com/. Sidney is a super cool guy and has been talking with me about all of this for a while now. His WWI terrain, IMHO, has got to be some of THE best out there if not indeed the best.

I was looking on Sidney's blog the other day... amazing stuff!

As to warlord doing ww1 plastic I really seriously would not hold your breath... I can't see it happening anytime soon... If ever. WW1 is pretty niche, and I'm not sure any of the Warlords are big time into it so I wouldn't let that stop you.

That's what I figure....but the way my luck goes......

I'm really pumped about a new project Sidney is starting. I've been picking his brain so much he's decided to create a .pdf for people who are getting ready to start WWI gaming. Here's what he said:

In fact your questions have given me an idea to prepare a PDF to be downloaded on my blog of "Getting Started with Great War wargaming". You've asked some great questions and I think others may be interested as well!!

When I was about 12 years old I bought a few boxes of the AIRFIX WWI US Infantry and German Infantry. I then built a mockup of the western front on a 4'x4' piece of board. I made it out of that playdough you let air dry. It was extremely heavy. I had blown up trees, shell holes, trenches, bunkers, the remains of a couple building on the edge, and barbed wire made out of dark grey thread. Unfortunately it eventually had to be thrown out. We went on vacation one Summer and while we were away there was a storm that blew out the window in my room and the terrain table was under it. It got wet. It had dried out by the time we got home, but eventually it started to mold and I couldn't get it to stop, and the smell was bad. The only thing I have left of it are some of the trees. I have no idea what happened to all my AIRFIX troops though. I think my parents got rid of them while I was camp.

I've wanted to do this again for so long but just never decided on a scale. Now that I have it's full steam ahead. This will play right into my vision for the man cave/gaming room - a WWI bunkerish style. I've been collecting ammo boxes from the era for storage and have some rather unique trench items to place in it. Once it's done (if ever) I'll finally have a place to display my WWI collection.

Brigade Games had a sale so I went ahead and bought a few packs of late war Germans.

I am a bit sorry to see they have no minis depicting the MG08/15 in use!!! All the the figures with that MG are carrying it.

I wonder why they are no longer producing new sculpts!?!?
