The Barbarian from Heroquest, when I was.....oh either 6,7,8. Heroquest was what got me into GW and minis etc in general!

The free Orlock Necromunda ganger with White Dwarf issue 190 !

Repainted so many times over the first few years the face is now an oval blob. I even added a red dot for the nose, Oh dear. I've come a long way...

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby philbagnall » Tue May 06, 2008 3:54 am

First attempt at model painting was an abortive effort on an Airfix 1:72 plane kit in enamels. Aged about 10 I think, and best forgotten....

Progressed on through Airfix's catalogue and tried some of the 54mm historicals with slightly better results (well not really) and the 1:32 multipose boxes (the japanese looked almost passable) before uni beckoned

First gaming mini was a v old citadel dark elf (the one with 2-handed sword & cloak) and one of the original cold ones with DE rider, both still in enamel block colour but with some finesse arriving. That'd be about 1983-4; they were very definitely 25mm figures with more realistic proportions back then IIRC. First wargames figures "proper" were 25mm Early Imp Romans from Minifigs (living in Southampton, in those days you could just turn up to the factory - the shopfront now is sadly no more)

Moved on to 15mm after that, found acrylics in the early 90s, but only truly started "proper" layered/highlighted figure painting when GWs LotR range appeared with the Jackson films. And now I can't stop the A-R layering even on bloomin 10mm figs!

ahem, er, oh yes first painting stuff.

started at roughly 6 on airfix and then discovered a company selling goblins at 8, highlighting and shading with no dilution in enamels, oh yes.

don't have those figures anymore :(

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

First model was a P-40 Kittyhawk fighter/bomber. I wasn't really that impressed by it to be honest, it didn't quite catch my interest and I haven't made another military model since (although I would like to).

My first wargaming model on the other hand was by no means my last! (My wallet, and my parents' can attest to this!Embarassed). The very first model I painted and assembled was the missile-launcher Space Marine from the Devastator box (the box before the current all plastic box). I thought the model and pose were great and my painting was ok too.

I painted them as Balck Templars simply because I liked the colour scheme (rules and codex Armageddon would be used later) but I still laugh at my original use of 'blood red' on my heavy weapons, mainly because I liked how they looked on the 3rd edition Ultramarines! Ah the innocence of youth....

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby Publius Cornelius Scipio » Tue May 06, 2008 12:37 pm

My first painted thing was a wargames model.

A WHFB orc w/ spear. Hundreds of models later and several different armies I'm finally taking a plunge into historical.

First Model Painted: 1/32 Douglas Dauntless. I'd guess I was about 9.

First Wargaming Model Painted: A giant slug from a very, very old Ral Partha or Greanadier box set of monsters. It was painted in US Olive Drab. Wink

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby MikeH » Fri May 09, 2008 12:04 pm

Oh tricky one to answer

first model would probaly have been an old airfix kit, probaly a plane from WWII, but to be honest I just cant remember

after all it would have been in the early 70's and me old brain aint what it used to be

first wargaming figure is easier to remember, it would have been in the early 80's when AD&D was sweeping the land. My first proper character (i.e one that lasted more then 1 adventure) was a dwarf fighter called Gnobrot and he was so good that I spent ages painting up a citadel dwarf figure to represent him on the table. it was painted in Humbrol paints and didn't turn out too bad

however the character got killed off soon after so the figure got left on a shelf and forgotten about

Freshly painted figs or units always find the most horrific and ignoble was to die, don't they?

it's one of the things i always do to my enemy.

kill his best painted pride and joy first, that way if you get a wooping you still have a morale victory.

p.s. dipped armies are imune to this trick and are deamed to be un sportsman like lol
