Revolution

Postby armchairsaxon » Fri Jun 22, 2012 12:25 pm

In case anyone is interested, the film "Revolution" is now out on DVD/Blu-Ray (Director's Cut). It's an epic about the AWI starring Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland amongst others. I recall it bombed when it came out although I remember thinking it was okay at the time.

I didn’t want this topic to prompt a debate/moan about the film. If you are into the AWI, as I am, you just might want to get hold a copy as there few films on this era. Currently you might be forgiven for thinking Mel Gibson singlehandedly won the war!

.. I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live, as the greatest he; ... and I do think that the poorest man in England is not bound in a strict sense to that government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under

Have to say I think The Patriot is quite entertaining for all it's inaccuracies. What other AWI films are out there?

When I have watched Revolution you can have my review. It just came this morning so may get chance to watch it at the weekend.

I have finally watched the film now. Apologies for the delay. The wife wasn’t keen so I had to wait for an opportunity to watch it on my own!

I would just say Revolution is just okay and that’s because I am interested in the period.

The basic plot centres around Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) and his son who end up enlisting in the American army when their boat and cargo of furs are seized by revolutionaries. Indeed the opening scene seems more like the French revolution than the American and features a prominent role for Annie Lennox who I haven’t seen acting before or since. Their first engagement is at Brooklyn Heights a sector of which is portrayed quite well for a battle scene pre-CGI with lots of extras. Tom and his son desert after the battle but find themselves unable to escape the war as it continues. The plot seems to drift a bit in places so I wasn’t exactly gripped by it.

The period and uniforms appear to be portrayed quite accurately. I got fed up with the constant narration from the Al Pacino character which goes on for most of the film even during the dialogue. I didn’t feel it was really necessary.

Another annoyance was that it is even more anti-British than The Patriot which is saying something!
