Well lets be honest here .Solo wargaming is not ideal but if you have a lack of opponents or into a faction of history that your friends arn't , it is clearly a second best option.

But a second best option is better than no option at all and it still keeps you within the hobby that you enjoy.

I was looking at the Normandy Firefight book thinking you could do something solo with that.

Being honest I think you can do that with most rules unless there are cards involved( which shouldnt be seen by your opponent) which have an impact on the game. Napoleon which is Foundry's Naps game is an example of one of these.

When I was serious chess player I played solo and then started pitting myself against a computer . Thats when it got a bit harder

That would be possible. You only have a single figure per side. The downside is that you know what the other chap is thinking and going to do. The thing with Firefight Normandy is that you aren't really allowed to communicate with your fellow gamers if your figure is outside of the communication range. Makes it a little awkward, but doable.

I am reading "First Clash" right now, which is a fictitious start to the Third World War, with the Reds advancing against the Canadians following an American retreat in Germany, c. 1984. It's filled with gaming ideas, as in what a whole battle scenario would be like, and what both sides would do, even down to route marches, when to attack, etc. So it could be written out, and then of course the rules will randomly determine the results of the pre-set actions. Or something. Filled me with ideas, anyway.

Could do this with any battle.

Another book that would be good - if your more into the early 20th century - is '1901' by Robert Conroy. Basically, the US is invaded by Germany in 1901.

Another one, since you are in Canada, is '1862' by Robert Conroy.
