Having problems with the Points System

Hi all I've been trying to work out a points game for the coming Monday however I don't know if it's me but the points system does not seem to add up.

On page 179 there are several examples under the Basic infantry points.

It says for example a typical tiny unit with one combat attack, one shot, morale of four plus and a single pip of stamina would be worth 11 points.

However I make this to be 22 double the amount stated.

one combat attack equals 1
one shot equals range of the 12 inches
morale of four plus equals 16
and a single pip of stamina equals 4

also the basic points for the artillery on page 180 says 27 points however I make it 41.

You seem to be right, Andy. I've never looked at the points system before because I don't use them, but a quick glance shows the first example as being 36 points for the unit when it is actually 37. I suggest that the points system is right, just the example of a small unit has been miscalculated (badly). It would appear that whoever added it all up for the tiny unit counted each stamina as one point rather four.

Good spot, but I would ignore it and just go with the suggested points system. As I said, the main example is only one point out for a standard unit.

By strange coincidence I have just been looking at the points system today with a view to starting to construct some Napoleonic forces.

I have to confess I was puzzled by the Infantry example on page 179. By my reckoning the cost should be:-
Hand to Hand - 6 x 1 = 6 points
Shooting - 2 per pip (18" smoothbore musket) = 2 x 3 = 6 points
Morale - 4 x 4 = 16 points
Stamina - 4 x 3 = 12 points
Total cost = 40 points.

The Tiny unit works out at:
Hand to Hand - 1 x 1 = 1 point
Shooting - 1 x 2 = 2 points
Morale - 4 x 4 =12 points
Stamina - 1 x 3 = 3 points
Total Cost = 18 points

The Small unit is:
Hand to Hand - 4 x 1 = 4 points
Shooting - 2 x 2 = 4 points
Morale - 4 x 4 = 12 points
Stamina - 2 x 3 = 6 points
Total Cost = 26 points

Strangely, the cavalry unit is correct at 44 points.

The artillery unit is:
Hand to Hand - 1 x 1 = 1 point
Shooting - up to 48" = 16 points
Morale - 4 x 2 = 8 points
Stamina - 2 x 2 =4 points
Total Cost = 29 points

Are the figures in Black Powder simpy typos - or am I missing something in the calculations?

Yes, I had used a 12" range to get 37 points. However, it shows that the example units are incorrect but the points system is still ok, so go ahead and use it, just ignore the examples. :)

Hi all thank you to the prompt response we normally do scenarios but for a change we fancied trying out the points system.

As for the artillery bit in my last post I got the stamina and morale wrong their two points per pip not as I did four.

Remember that the morale "pips" are counted down from 6, not up from one, eg moral of 6 is one pip, 5 is 2 pips and so on, this should corrct some of the errors.

However points are evil and must die...
Boy, it sure would be nice if we had some grenades, don't you think?

I didn't know that, either! But then, I have only skimmed the section briefly because I never use points and thought I might be able to help. Seems not! :(
