StrongTone Question

Postby Correus » Wed May 30, 2012 2:49 am

Have a Strong Tone question and I'm not sure if I'm going to ask it correctly or not.

Why applying, does it take on the hue of the color it's being applied on or is it a general brownish tone? For example - let's say I paint an ECW fig with a Blue top, red sash and brown pants. With the Strong Tone look Bluish on the Blue, reddish on the red and brownish on the brown?

It should generally settle down and although it will down-tone your colours somewhat. It will be generally transparent though.

So it does take on the hue of the color and doesn't make it look dirty? :?

It might look a little dirty, depending on how light your colour base is, white will be dirty. Blue is ok, red is ok, yellow can be dirty. Watch for accumulation and make sure you wipe off with a clean brush any areas that build up.

Blue- Better use Dark tone. It works well with blues and geens

Yellow or any light tones - Better use Soft tone.

If just using strong tone best to thin it a little it will prevent some distortion of colours and as Grant says watch out and remove any accumulations . ;)

Just visiting seeing what you guys where upto :D

Yes I was just picking up a PM as I still get a few on various topics mostly Wargames Emporium in Bolton as he stocked quite a large range of WHH stuff and of course the curtain has finally come down which most of us said would happen. As a result the demand for WHH stuff has gone through the roof as people panic buy the last few copies of WAB2 and KGN etc. People eh! they have only had over 6 months to get the books they have needed and leave them to the last second. My local store has sold all his WAB2s but still had a copy of KGN for £38.00 as at yesterday and 2 copies of Waterloo.

Oh aplogies for the author of this thread Correus ( nice to see him back as well ;) for wondering off topic

Also Grant Please look after Mrtn for me as he is a good friend from my Herdstone days ;)

Thought you might have commented on the WHH! Looks like plans are already afoot to keep the flame aglow with KGN I mean BGK!

Take care dude!

Cheers Mate .

As one of our club members is involved ( the Proofreader) I have known for some time about the plans a foot for the Kursk book and with Piers involved as well its like hearing everything in stereo :D

With the release of the long awaited Bolt ACtion rules as well it should be a great year for WW2 of which none of this I/us predicted at the start of the year . :D

I have already started building my WW2 Soviet army in readiness ;)

Again apologies to Correus but I hope i helped him with his query ;)

I've used the army painter strong tone a lot - on all kinds of colours for about two years now. I use the brush on technique not dipping.

It gives a translucent finish with an overall brownish hue. This works OK on all natural, muted colours. If you have paints that look like modern artificial colours then the strong tone is not so good on the colours that are not close to brown on the colour wheel.

With ECW assuming your colours are in period shades I don't think you will have to much of a problem. I have done a lot of ancient, Napoleonic, ACW and WWII figures with strong tone and not had any problems.

If in doubt try a single figure. But make sure to matt it down before deciding. The finish often looks horrible when the dip has dried. Then you get a magic transformation once it is matted.

For predominantly white or yellow figures, soft tone is best.

For predominantly mid to dark blue figures dark tone looks good.
