What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby Paul @ Warlord Games » Sat May 03, 2008 2:21 pm

Just for fun!

Let's break this down into two parts:

1. The first model you painted. How did it turn out?

2. The first wargaming/roleplaying miniatuire you painted. How did that turn out?

Cheers,

Paul

LOL, I wish I could remember it was 44 years ago.... so it must have been airfix plastics and probably some WW2 stuff, I'd like to think it was the Romans though - 44 years and still painting plastic Romans :)

It was back in the 80s. I was playing roleplaying games and doing miniature collecting on the side. I bought my first models on a visit to London - they were from prince August. The first model I painted was the male Halfling model (seen here), the success was - questionable, as I just took thick undilluted primary colours (don't know the brand anymore) - one layer, no highlights or shading Laughing

The first wargaming model I painted was half a decade later - one of a lot of 15mm Greek Hoplites from the Historical Heroes Range (seen here). I had learned a lot at that time and used a much softer colour composition, though nothing too fancy due to the scale.

Sadly I managed to give away all of my models during the late 90s, so I had to restart my collection a couple of years ago. The first painted model of the new batch can be seen here - but I quickly learned to put more emphasize into it (second try seen here). Still not an artist, but well, these are 15mm Wink

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby JB Coulter » Sat May 03, 2008 10:57 pm

it was an old lead AD&D figure, a barbaian of some sort holding a sword over his head one hand on the hilt one on the blade, odd thing was his cape seemd to be tangled up with his hand and was actually being held up with the sword... odd pose, but i painted him because it was the only figure i had to represent my character and i was very keen to play D&D with my pals.

i used several differant types of paint some rather dodgy brushes and in the end it looked like i had dripped paint infront of an electric fan while holding the figure up in front of it.

Hmm. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, so it's hard to rmember. I suspect that the first 'real' (as opposed to soft plastic) figure I painted was probably either a Hinchliffe 25mm Napoleonic figure of some sort, or one of Airfix's 54mm hard plastic kits - 10th Hussar or another from that range.

Always liked Napoleonics - still do - just don't have the time or patience to 'do' Napoleonics, other than in 6mm.

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby Jim » Sun May 04, 2008 6:00 am

My first miniature was not that long ago. Only 12 years ago and when I bought a single spacemarine terminator with assault cannon.

I dont know what was thicker, the terminator armour or my paint.

I havent used anyother paints since i started with GW paints. I now, however, water them down by about 40% - 50%.

In the 70s. WWII Germans 1:72 by Matchbox. Then Afrikakorps 1:72 by Airfix, followed by French Foreign Legion and finally Romans!

Didn't look too great since I used Enamel Paints and a fairly big brush. But certainly better than my mate's who didn't paint his 8th Army at all..hehe.

Glory Days...

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

My first painted model was an Airfix 1/32 scale Afrika Korps in the kneeling and firing pose. He got a liberal coating of Humbrol Silver Fox. I was 5 years old and it's my earliest memory - sat in our garage in Wollaton with a big apron on and newspaper laid over an old desk.

The first wargames model I painted was for roleplaying. From a dungy old shop in Nottingham called Asgard. Dingy, dusty and ark but an absolute treasure trove for a young Sawyer.

I picked up a handful of Ral Partha Orcs. Really nice figures which I didn't dare paint. Then I found White Dwarf (little did I know what that would have in store for me later!) I picked up issue 16 and devoured it (not literally on this occasion!).

Within the pages of the 2-3 issues I bought there was talk of a process to paint realistic armour. I was hooked. I burnished the armour with a soft wire brush, painted it liberally with blue/black oil paint and left it for a couple of houirs as per the article. Then with a lintg free cloth I rubbed the excess off. It was a kind of reverese drybrushing but gave bloody great results. Since then the modelling and painting side of the hobby has held me in its warm embrace...

Ah, happy days...

My first paint try was a airfix 1/72 centurio.

My first wargames model was a front rank miniature prussian SYW grenadier.

What was the first model/miniature you painted?

Postby bork da basher » Sun May 04, 2008 3:32 pm

at the tender age of 10 years old i painted a plastic khorne berserker in walsall games workshop. i had no idea what it was, that it could be used in a game or why i was painting it. it looked like i'd dropped it into a bucket of multicoloured emulsion. nearly 14 years later my skills have narrowly improved but i must have enjoyed myself back then or i wouldnt be here now.
