Need army suggestions

Postby Paul @ Warlord Games » Fri Feb 20, 2009 3:08 pm

Well, I've managed to avoid the lure of yet more Bolt Action models being added to my painting desk which, quite frankly, is amazing. That said I still have a Mortar team and medic half completed for my Red Devils but still...

What's this got to do with ECW? Well, with everyone at Warlord going Pike & Shotte mad I thought I ought to join the fray. With everyone here being Monarchists to a man it would be rude if I didn't side with the underdog and do a Parliamentarian force.

Now, originally I'd planned to do Hopton's Cornish at Lansdowne. The thought of mental Cornishmen charging up a hill with pikes is almost irresistable. I like making armies with a themee rather than bog standard and this one really appealed in character.

But they're Royalist.

So, what I'm after is suggestions for out of the ordinary or themed armies for Parliament.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Paul

How about Fairfax's 1643 army - mostly musket and horse with lots of clubmen?

There are useful historically based sample armies in the Forlorn Hope rule set

I am currently facing the same dilemma. Even the area I live in doesn't appear to have been too involved in any major fightings. Apparently too busy burning witches.

Got hold of the first four 'Shadow on the Crown' novels and hope to find something there.

Otherwise I'd be grateful for any hints as well.

Need army suggestions

I myself like to theme armies around my home County of Cumbria (hence my 34th of foot for Napoleonic and the Carvetii Celts I've been promising myself). Now, like Paul and SP I intend to declare for Cromwell rather than those girly royalists, however my first research indicates Cumbria (or at least Carlisle) was actually on the King's side. As a second choice I've considered an army based round my adpoted home of Sunderland, but haven't managed to turn up much info.

Any historians recommend a good book/website or similar to help me along?

I live near Lansdown and had a walk around the battle site last week. Wallers troops were well placed and entrenched but were pushed back by Hoptons troops. You have to stand on the steep hill to see what a feat this actually was. Why not base your force on Wallers army which had a very large cavalry contingent. I think he had approx 2000 inf and 2000 horse. Waller used his horse very aggressively and to good effect. Then in time you could go on to create Hoptons force and have both armies !!

A close substitute could be the Preston campaign:

Best place for good books on the major battles armies and also local aspects of the the Civil war are from Caliver books.

You could always do the Fairfax's forces of Yorkshire, they fought over in the NW also under Black Tom ? Failing that the forces under Bereton & Shuttleworth may be the answer ?

As Paul said the Preston campaign is your best bet though are their plans for a New Model Army set ?

You could mix some Scots figures with bonnets (when they are out), in with your Parliamentrian figures for a more Northern flavour. As blue bonnets worn by bothsides in the English Northern forces.
