Having been a wargamer and figure painter for over 30 years I was some what undecided on the AP hype that suddenly hit the wargaming community a while back, thinking to myself could you really just base coat a figure and then dip it for amazing results. In the end I thought I would give it ago on a period I had been threatening to do for ages, all of the photo's below are figure's just base coated then a brush coat of Army Painter Strong Tone and a couple of highlights.
So if you haven't tried it yet give it ago. Regards Nick
Excellent stuff! I have been using the AP for my entire French Nap project, but mine don't look as nice as yours. I think because I don't highlight after.
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?
Very fine job, lovely colours... and great base tufting, I love the step by step too. I think if I ventured into Naps territory again id be tempted to use dip.. (or just buy 54mm figs for skirmishing)

Interestingly, I use Dark Tone - not Strong Tone. Maybe I will try the mid one next unit, which are a unit of Lights.

But is it art?... If it does the job I'm all for it, too many times have i got into the debate of "cheating" at painting, but different projects require different approaches, the hordes needed for naps require a good looking but quick and easy approach and the Army Painter fits the bill nicely. also lovely minis.

I think many of the results that people can get - like FNG and Phil - with AP greatly exceed the results of "hand painting". By no means do I wish to start a debate!
I view AP as a tool - no different than a spray primer vs. a brush-on primer, a dremel vs a hand drill, and if it gets you to the finish line, with or without time savings, with a great looking mini, then I'm all for it!

No mate, after the dip gloss coat is dry I then use the AP matt spray to dull down the gloss finish. When that is dry I then add the highlights I require. Works with great results. I also finish the figure with a matt spray to protect the figure, GW purity seal or vallejo matt.
Thanks for the info Nick as when i start my Nap austrians i intend to use dark tone over white n highlight crossbelts etc afterwards by the way like your site as well lovely work keep it up n keep inspiring ok
