2nd Corps Chancellorsville

Postby stryker » Fri Mar 30, 2012 4:25 pm

So, I'm planning a force based on the 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia during the Battle of Chancellorsville. So far, I have my force organized into "Brigades" as per the Black Powder system, with each brigade representing a division and the actual brigades are "units" as laid out in Black Powder, with each "brigade" possessing essentially between 7 and 5 units. I have noticed, in planning out my forces, that there seems to be an overage of artillery, with each "brigade" having, on average, four guns attached under the heading of a single "unit", with each gun representing a battery. Considering just the guns attached to the infantry "brigades" themselves, that brings the total to 17 pieces. Add to that the 10 guns in the artillery reserve "brigade" and that seems to be quite a lot of artillery.

Are there any ACW scholars or experienced players who happen to know if this is, in fact, normal for such a force during this era or if I somehow did my figuring wrong?

Thanks in advance

Hi if I have you right you are using a battalion of infantry to represent an actual brigade and several battalions brigaded together as a Division, something I do for large Napoleonic battles. Lets take A.P Hills Division this had 28 battalions in 6 brigades with an artillery brigade of 5 batteries as direct support. Now Confederate batteries were on the small side, usually 4 guns (from memory!!) really a half battery so 28 battalions are supported by 20 cannons, take the same ratio to your scaled down list 6 battalions supported by 5/6 cannon i.e a battery ,
so if I was representing A. P Hills Division as you are going to I would have the following

Brigade (Div) Commander A P Hill

6 x Confederate Infantry Battalions
1 x Confederate Artillery Battery

D. E Hills Division 22 battalions in 5 brigades supported by 16 guns in 4 batteries would be

Brigade (Div) Commander D.H Hill

5 Confederate Infantry Battalions
1 x Half Battery

we represent full batteries with two guns and half batteries with 1 gun, full batteries have the normal shooting stats of 3-2-1 and half have stas of 2-1-1 everything moral is the same and stamina is one less

Thats how I would do it, hope it helps
