Cavalry unit size compared to infantry

Postby Horster » Tue Mar 27, 2012 6:28 pm

I am reading several historic oobs to get inspiration for a Nap Blackpowder force and scenarios. Now I wonder, if the unit sizes suggested in the rules (standard size 24 inf 12 cav) mean that a standard sized cavalry unit represents round about half as many men as an infantry unit. I found most infantry battailions at 400-800, while cavalry squardons over 150 men were really rare, often much smaller. :?
How should I handle this? Use lots of 'small' units, take one 'standard' unit as regiment and not as squadron or ignore the fact and use 12 riders for one squadron (and paint lots of horses :| )

Your suggestions, experiences? Am I missing something?

You have arrived at the same place as I did!

Infantry at 1:25 works out nicely - our standard French unit is 33 strong (cmd of mounted officer, drummer, flag, two troopers; 3 stands of 6; grenadiers of 6; and two half stands of 2 Voltigeurs - total 33). But we have some units at 23. So that's our infantry range.

Cavalry would be ungodly large at 1:25, so we cut it down to 1:50 - 6 stands at two horse (a squadron).
So 12 is a standard size cavalry unit.

Sounds like we think alike!

At the moment Dutch/Belgians for Quatres Bras in 20mm (2nd Division + cavalry ready for dipping), some French shall follow. To get something in 28mm there are 1813 French (some already painted) and Prussian Landwehr. I thought about the battle of Hagelberg, not too big but enough for an interesting game I think. You are into the 1813-14 campaign as well? (think I read sth like that)

Thanks Horster! The Westphalians were fun. Used a dremel to carve the gaiters for the legs and a hussar head for the shako. A lot of fiddly work...

Looking forward to your pics.
