New Lamp

Quick 'heads-up' to everyone. I just bought a new desk lamp for myself from IKEA. I couldn't quite believe how cheap it was, in fact we were meandering round the lighting dept and I pointed it out to the wife saying, "Of course, ideally if money were no object I'd be looking for this sort of thing," turned over the price ticket and saw it was £15.99 reduced to £9.99.



It's called the 'Global' lamp and ... it's been discontinued! Run rabbits run! It was reduced because it was discontinued and then because we took the last in the store (the display model) it needed taking down to the 'Bargain Corner' for safety testing and they reduced it further to £4.50!

I urge all those who, like me, are making do with slightly bendy desk lamps, to scamper to your local IKEA (don't bother trying Cardiff Bay, they're out) to see if they have any left.

Yep you got a bargain there mate!

I have always used the Argos equivalent and that was pretty cheap at the time I bought it. I'll be honest the replacement daylight lamps cost more that the light fitting itself

I am hoping to source the next lamp through our suppliers ? ( We are electricians!)

They reduced it to £4.50 because it was un-safe
Good spot Cubster, I was in the lighting dept of Ikea in Edinburgh on Friday and did'nt see this but then I wasn't looking, although I did spot a similar one in Homebase last week end and I think that was only a £10!

If it helps me paint half as well as him, I'd buy 10!

Truth be told, I'm a supporter of the new energy saving bulbs, but they are hell for painting. That looks like it gives quite a good light.

I used it last night and it was very good in fairness, put a lot more unshadowed light on the models without getting in the way.

Good buy, sir! Daylightlamps.com do a very good daylight fluorescent, great for colour rendering, but pricey at £80! Argos do a similar lamp to the IKEA one for about £20 - don't know how it is for light output - but they also do a very good 50W halogen lamp for £17 which is very good - though it does get quite hot.
We've been sold a pup over this "low energy" lighting thing - 2nd and 3rd generation CFLs are better for light output and response than the originals, but they're no more enviro friendly than tungsten or halogen bulbs 'cos of the mercury they contain. Halogen and LEDs have now improved enormously, and are far better for light output/efficiency - bloomin' EU regulation! Just goes to show that, no matter who you vote for, you still get government!

I hate the new energy saving lights with a passion, I'm sure the room gets darker when you switch them on. It's a fallacy that they save energy, since you need to turn the things on an hour in advance to get them to throw out any amount of light at all. And even then they are barely strong enough to read by unless you use something like a 150W equivalent, which brings me back to the initial argument...

I have one of those big magnifying lights that bolts to the desk, but it tends to cast shadows, so I think a trip to IKEA for one of those to use for fill in light is in order

I picked up a new Halogen bulb for my lamp. It's INSANE! WOW! Like daylight. Supposedly it still saves 30%, who knows.

Yeah the new energy savers have me rethinking the lighting systems in my house, but I come back to loving them for the energy savings.

Unfortunately LED lamps are still pretty expensive. The price is coming down. I can obtain through our trade GU10 replacement LED lamps for betwern £7.00- £10.00 . THey were £15.00 last year.But for retail I would expect to pay anything from upwards of £12.00.

The advantages are the reduced energy consumption 5w =50w for a conventional lamp and they last around 5 years.
And before anyone atempts to correct my terminology

Lamps are those things you screw into light fittings.
Bulbs you plant in the earth!
