Super Glue Blues

Postby Colonel White » Wed Mar 21, 2012 9:42 am

Guys- I am looking for tips on SuperGlue storage as I appear to be throwing money away on half full bottles that I can gert my hands on the contents .

I have particular problems with the thicker Gel types.

I appear to suffer from glued up caps which arn't designed to get glued up but do. With the Army painter thinner type glue I have a pin which ended up getting superglued into the nozel which was there to prevent it getting clogged up

I just can't help laughing at the bad luck with super glue that I am experiencing .

I have probably thrown away 4 half bottles already over the past 6 weeks!.

I have some of the Gale Force Nine super glue, called Hobby Glue. Had it for about three years. Still good. This glue has a super long nozzle which may be the secret to it's longevity.

That is why I buy super glue 3 packs for 99p from the 99p shop, so I don't feel so bad about the amount that is wasted!

Yeah, I get card strips of goodness knows how many superglue tubes at the poundshop or bargain basement store.

I fashioned a wee device years back for storing the opened tubes upright - it looks a bit like a big upturned clothes peg. So long as you smear vaseline round the thread of the screw cap, blow into the nozzle after use to clear bubbles and store it upright, there's no reason those tubes should misbehave in the way our family superglue tubes always did in the back of 'bits drawer'.

I keep a tub of dozens of unopened tubes on standby and when one runs out, I just reach for the next.

I had the same problem with the 'modelling' grade superglues. Now I use standard Loctite from Robert Dyas or wherever - the one with the long black sort of conical top. Doesn't go solid or clog up the tip and lasts ages.

If it's a bottle try standing it upright then gently squeezing the bottle so that the air is slowly forced out. Wipe the top and then release the bottle so that it sucks the air back in. It should clear the nozzle sufficiently to keep the hole clear. Works for me, though I don't use the gel stuff.
The best stuff I have found is in Poundland under the "ToolBox" logo on black and yellow card. Three little bottles with additional long tube attachments and a map pin. Lasts a long time and never clogs! You can fit a separate nozzle, so if it does clog, you can cut it and replace it. There is a push on cap as well. Keep the bottle upright, no problem. Best £1 you'll spend! Here's a link :D

I may join the Poundland brigade myself though the thin stuff I don't appear to have the problems with . I may try the vaseline method as mentioned by Cubby and see how I get on . Its just that I find the Gel stuff useful for Metal Tank construction as some of the parts are quite heavy.

I have no idea how you manage with Gorilla Glue unless they have changed the Formulation as the stuff expands as it drys which is useless for most model applications .

I follow the 99 Euro cent for 5 - 6 tubes (3 gr each) fraction for years. Opened I put them upright, keep the nose and thread clean and you can use them up to the last drop.
With my many models to glue (especially all the ships...) I would need a second job if I would pay the crazy prices asked for the other stuff.
