Kicking the Habit

Postby Biggus Dickus » Mon Mar 19, 2012 6:35 pm

As discussed on another thread GW/citadel are changing their paints, I've totally had it with GW and need to kick my addiction to some of their paints, into touch.........I'm getting low on some of the colours I use the most for base coats, so it's either, go out and stock up before the change.......which is just kicking the can down the road, or manning up and just cutting them out of my life right away.
However to do this I need some help, I rely on the internet to get stuff as living in deepest darkest Dorset there aren't any vallejo outlets i know of that i can go visit for a close up look.
I'm hoping that someone out there will use/know the colours I'm listing and know which ones i can best replace them with from Vallejo.
Many thanks in advance to everyone for the help. :D

OK I use these colours from GW/Citadel most and need to replace them with something the same if at all possible or at best closest match.

Foundation paint Tallarn Flesh
Foundation paint Khemri Brown
Dark Flesh
Boltgun metal
Scorched Brown
Bleached Bone

My main concern is coverage of the foundation paint replacement I use it as a single base coat, so don't really want a thin paint that needs several coats to cover.

I'm doing the same B.D. and phasing out what I have left of GW, I'm going back to Revell Aqua color, they have a quite a big range and most are the same or similar to GW, bleached bone - beige/ boltgun metal - steel / scorched brown - leather / khemri - earth brown, the only one I haven't seen similar is tallarn but then I never looked for that in the past as I always used tallarn. I switched to GW years ago as they were slightly easier to get hold of, but as I'm moving soon it will be easier for me to go to Hobby craft for the revell,(that's the only place I've seen them but you can get them direct from revell.... I think). They are extremely thick though, probably the thickest I've seen and I've had to thin them before even for use as a single base coat!! So I shall go back to these and use vallejo for the rest. Hope this helps a bit.

Attaboy, BD!

My recommendations:

Dark Flesh: Saddle Brown
Scorched Brown: German Black Brown
Bleached Bone: Pale Sand

Boltgun: use the Liquid Gold line from Vallejo, it's alcohol based. Love it. White Gold is the match. Maybe a bit light, but it works.

Foundation Tallarn: Brown Sand. I can't profess to know how much better/worse it covers in one coat.
Foundation Khemri: US Field Drab. Good one coat coverage.

Dunno how deep in Dorset you are BD but Setchfields in Poole stock Vallejo. Bottom end of the High Street towards the Quay. Not the friendliest model shop in the world, but at least it's a convenient source of paint. They do stock Vallejo Air too, but sadly not the washes and other stuff.

Thanks guys, all comments extremely welcome.......
i had no idea there were so many fellow addicts out there, we'll have to consider having a GW annonymous meeting on thursday nights.
"hello my name is Simon...errr B.D.I was doing three, maybe four pots a month...maybe a few brushes and the occasional wash, but i have turned my life around" ;)

It may be advisable to have a trusted friend with you at all times when in town to talk you down when looking in the window at all the warhammer!!!!!!

will use the links thanks Big Al ...and Stuart thanks for the advice on Humbrol i have a couple of those from Hobby craft so may well pad out my collection!
C.M. I go to poole quite a bit and know the shop in question haven't been in there for a while and hadn't noticed they sold Vallejo!!!! ......where's the palm slap to face smilie? I'll make a point of going in there shortly!
Thanks Grant much appreciated, I knew deep down that someone who uses AP dip couldn't be all bad

And finally I hope this thread helps all the other afflicted with the same addictions....and helps them get off their cravings. No one can make that choice but you, the need to kick the habit has to come from within , just remember there is a support network here for you when you need it ;)

Indeed, I'm switching to Vallejo and others now, as GW are just taking the @_@@ ;) whats more they're probably going to knock the prices up on these new paints and put them in smaller pots too...

I tried kicking the habit once. I got beaten to a pulp. Apparently they were really escaped convicts and were just disguised as nuns.
