It may sound silly, but really if the end result you want is black, don't start with black :) It kinda leaves you with nowhere to go with shading. I prime figures black but then 'dampbrush' them white and work from there. The only thing I would start from a black base with would be chainmail and bare metal surfaces.

For things like black cloth or boots I would start from a mid-grey to charcoal grey base, wash with black to shade it then highlight with anything from blue to brown. You really have to experiment anyway to see what looks best for you - exactly what you do depends very much on the scale you are working in.

The Army Painter dips don't attract me at all, mainly because a lot of the results I've seen look very obviously dipped. There's no subtlety to the shading like you can achieve with inks. I have no doubt that some very nice results can be had if you know what you're doing, but I'd rather stick to what I know best.

and @clive 'Black, it's all black!' haha thanks for reminding me of that :) My old art teacher always used to go on about black not existing in nature. What with that and Life of Brian's 'Romanes eunt domus? People called Romans they go the house?', I swear all these comedians went to the same school I did.

@Cubster - That's a beautiful Big Wullie you have there.

Which is ironic really considering the twisted little ... ah well, perhaps not.

Is this helpful?? http://www.wiltrichs.com/tutorials/painting-black/ I remembered seeing it a while ago. There is some other useful bits and pieces on the site too. I think the other bit of advice I would give you is too keep your highlights small and sharp so the majority of the miniature looks dark. Game Colour 'heavy charcoal' has been quite useful to me recently when highlighting black ecw hats- might be similar to GW charadon garanite? Good luck with the painting.

Yes, thanks - I'd already realised that this was a case of "I wouldn't start from here", so some remedial action last night has lightened (or shed some light on?) the doggies. I'll start to work with those glazes now to get the shading and see what they look like: more photos when there's summat to see!
