Help me pop my WG cherry

Postby Mister_Chinnery » Sun Mar 11, 2012 11:34 am

Hello chaps, I've just ordered my first WG mini, the Celt standard bearer. Now I need inspiration..would anyone be kind enough to post some pics of theirs? In fact, any tips on colour schemes, techniques, background history etc would be very much appreciated.

Thanks guys, Mat

Here we go, it was one of the first Warlord models I bought too, maybe even the actual first, I don't recall. Lovely model and it really does cry out for painting. I did the head way too grey/green so it looks like a trophy from last weekend's battle more than a fresh one. I decided the top of the pole needed a little something fancy too so I did a little criss-cross pattern that looks harder to paint than it really was.

Mine falls way short of Cubster's wonderful interpretation. You can't tell but I did layer the cloak, the trousers were painted blue, then the stripes were painted on with bleached bone, highlighted with a mix of that with another paler cream, then the light cream it's self. The blue was then wnet over down the center with a mix of the original and a lighter ble leaving the darker blue on the border, then the lighter on it's own on the higher points. I'm not a brilliant painter but I've got decent brush control so it's a fairly easy process. i decided to give the trousers, beheaded head and the face attention to make it pop a bit.

Thanks guys very helpful, great painting. Have to say yours is especially good cubster, have you got any tips on that chequered/tartan effect please? And the top of the standard, how did you do that? Thanks :)

Both are basically simple geometry. Keeping it simple is a good idea.

If you sketch the sort of pattern you want on a piece of paper, just to practise, it will help when you get round to transferring that onto your model. Putting some dots down as 'markers' will help to keep your lines in the right place. All you need do is paint in some faint horizontal lines (keep the paint very thin), then some vertical ones to give you the check. A little spot of colour where the lines intersect is a nice touch and is quick and easy to do.

With the pole, I put three dots in a vertical line at the front, then three at the back, then again three on each side. These dots are an easy guide to put your diagonal lines in place, first in one direction, then the other to form a criss-cross. Once that's done it just takes some dark brown lines to give the illusion that the lines are weaving back and forth with each other.

Thanks cubster, ill definitely try the trouser technique, I'm pretty sure I haven't got the brush control for the standard yet though.
