If you sketch the sort of pattern you want on a piece of paper, just to practise, it will help when you get round to transferring that onto your model. Putting some dots down as 'markers' will help to keep your lines in the right place. All you need do is paint in some faint horizontal lines (keep the paint very thin), then some vertical ones to give you the check. A little spot of colour where the lines intersect is a nice touch and is quick and easy to do.
With the pole, I put three dots in a vertical line at the front, then three at the back, then again three on each side. These dots are an easy guide to put your diagonal lines in place, first in one direction, then the other to form a criss-cross. Once that's done it just takes some dark brown lines to give the illusion that the lines are weaving back and forth with each other.
