Have you hacked my phone? ;).....strange because i don't have one!!!
But as for me,that's about the sum total of it...you've got my number ;) hahahaha....Mrs B.D. is very interested in Romans....just as well I'd be out on my ear otherwise!

@Cubster all things are possible, but I prefer the latin for "Careful Now, or you'll have someones eye out with that"

When you browse these forums you pick up certain vibes. My guesswork was based solely on some of your musings. :D

It's very nice, BD - will look superb when it's got the bone handle and engraving. The work on the blade looks really good - hope Mrs BD doesn't pick up the wrong one at practice time ...

Re: Pompeii Gladius Naming Competition, UPDATE

Postby Biggus Dickus » Fri Mar 09, 2012 3:00 pm

Well it's been a long time since this project got underway. Sadly Ian Rodger Woodcarver rather wasted my time....three months and little communication later, I decide to drop the idea of having the pommel engraved with the name of the sword. He said it would only be a couple of hours work and that it was on his work bench ready to be started in January...Hey Ho.....you live and learn, can't win them all.......I should have taken the three months to learn how to carve wood myself. So bitterness aside I wouldn't recommend Ian Rodger to anyone wanting anything carved, sorry about that. So I was more than extremely gutted...but had to press on with plan B.
I asked Len Morgan at fabrica to make a replacement handle whilst he was sorting out the scabbard.
After one week away with him it arrived today, and i'm very impressed by the results.
Len has done a fantastic job.
Now i need to find a local ancient sword fighting training school!
Here are the photo's of the finished Gladius. I'll have a sacred naming ceremony tomorrow with a bottle of "Stinger" ale from badger!!!!...I know the japanese use rice wine....but I think it is appropriate!

That is really fine! Shame your wood carver let you down but the finished one looks stunning. Love the scabbard!

Thanks Guys, much appreciated....it will be a Roman helmet I get next time.....likely much later in the year...it seems I'm buying legionary equipment in stages.....is it possible I'm turning into a reenactor?....I was hoping to get proficient in gladius style sword play so i could get a job series 4 of pre-prequal Spartacus...I've also been practicing my lines..."yes, Dominus, as you command" ;)...............Lucy lawlass :D

@Paul.....I'm sure, being very fleet of foot, that I'll be able to jump out of the way like a gazelle ;) But just in case, I'd like some plate armour and a big shield.

@Mike as Morrissey used to say "Plans can fall through, as so often they do" ;)

@Big Al I reckon 5pm saturday in that case!

Nicely looking woodwork.

Have you did a ballance test with the blade for the centre of weight?

Hope you don't do the naming ceremony with too much alcohol. Sharp toys and drinks..... ;)
