I find these days that using an Airbrush is too much bother. I use the Flames of War Spray cans that are made by Army Painter.

I am very pleased with the results with the British colour actually looking like Khaki drab . The Vallejo version for painting touch ups and using mixed with beige for highlights is Russian Uniform.

But the idea of giving battlefront money is a little upsetting.

Ah so GW arn't the most hated company then!

I think Army Painter would have a fair amount of the percentage on the sprays anyway. I havnt tried looking to see if they are in fact duplicated within the AP spray range as the AP range is a tad easier to get hold of around my parts.

I can't hate GW, they've been too good to me in the past. Battlefront on the other hand.....

I love GW, they make Devlan Mud. If they ever stop making that I'll probably have to throw myself under a bus.

Oh and as for the airbrush, I probably wouldnt use it either, but the camo patterns on the German stuff, and the underspray of earth colour aren't really practical with a can.

It's amazing how much love this one little wash pot gets in the miniatures painting community.

Never tried it. I'll have to pick some up on Sunday when I'm in town. I've got a couple of mucky glazes and washes I've mixed myself that I use ... if it saves me a job mixing it up I'll be happy enough.

Then I shall immerse myself in this eldritch pool, crowded as it is, with gay* abandon.

I found a recipe online for making your own ink washes. Tried it and it works pretty much exactly like Devlan Mud. At a fraction of the cost.

You need:

Winsor and Newton Acrylic Flow Improver
Winsor and Newton Acrylic Matt Medium
Deionised Water
Acrylic Artists Inks

Mix 1 part of Flow Improver with 9 parts of Water, then mix this 1 part with 1 part of Matt Medium and shake well. It should look like frothy milk. This is a stock solution so you can make plenty of it.

To make your wash take 15ml of the stock solution and add 20 drops of ink (15 drops of Burnt Umber + 5 drops Black comes out near exactly Devlan Mud). Winsor and Newton media and Rowney inks are what I used so I can promise that those work. Other makes will probably do just as well though. And the bonus is you can make any colour wash you want.

The only thing you need to watch out for is that these settle more on standing than the GW stuff, so you need to shake well before use.
