Soviet WW2 colour(ed) photos

Postby Ney Bother » Sun Mar 04, 2012 10:30 am

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I found this site recently, unfortunately after I'd already painted my first batch of troops though... :?

But I think this pictures make a good resource and inspiration:

Looks like that first photo is Bilbo Baggins passing his medical at home and being drafted.
"You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me, it's a full time job." – Lt. Bromhead to Prince Dabulamanzi before the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

Unfortunately these photos are nearly useless as source for colour. They are coloured by hand post processing. Obvious on the ones that are only part coloured.

Anyway, most old colour film too is not 100% authentic. A good example are the Battle of Midway shots from John Ford.

Use them as inspiration but not as resource for the colour.

My understanding is that, colour-wise, pretty much anything goes for the Soviets (within reason obviously). I take that to mean that I don't have to be quite as much of a slave to the guide as I would be for many other historical forces from that last 4-500 years or so.

That's the philosophy I've used for my paint jobs anyway :lol:

@Cubster
If we're playing caption competitions, I'd have the guy in the middle saying "And Olga here will be giving you your enema".
