Nobody is "getting excited" Grant. And yes I have emailed steve for a clarification, shame he hasn't replied yet.

I was not screaming "warhammer bad", I was making the valid point, based on what was said about getting "maximum benefit" which implied to me, and others, some sort of modifier bonus within the rules for having a certain number of ranks. That would be a departure from the orginal rules.

Tell me where I said warhammer as a negative? I suggest you just made it up. My point was warhammer uses rank counting, BP doesn't and in my view shouldn't.

Of course you can do what you want, but if the basics of the pike and shotte game require rank stacking then that's having to ignore something that would be pretty fundamentally written into the rules.

I do apologise for taking the information you posted and actually wanting to discuss the points made within it. You obviously did miss my point as you started going on about formations and implying anyone who can't adjust is some sort of moron. That's not what my point was - it was very, very simply - if 3 or more ranks is written into the rules in terms of gettin a combat bonus then that is rank counting, which is a departure.

Very, very simple point to question.

Er, Jazbo, I think someone is getting excited here. Can you tone it down a bit? No-one else is making a big deal out of it.

Couldn't have said it better.
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Have I missed something? I could have sworn I saw a post about "the Pike and Shotte version of Black Powder"

Didn't we establish months ago that there will be no Pike and Shotte version of Black Powder and instead we will be getting a freestanding set of rules for Pike and Shotte? Please don't tell me that was just wishful thinking on my part. :? I've been looking forward to it!

Because surely there are concepts required for Pike and Shotte - notably pike tactics generally and push of pike in particular - that are totally alien to the Black Powder era? I suppose the clue is in the name really, the "Pike" bit, perhaps? ;)

Hi

Opened a can of worms here then :)

Have been away for a few days, but my mail to Jaz has bounced for some reason, so thought it best to put my reply here to the question about pikes/ranks

Hi Jaz

I see how it could look that way when out of context, but thankfully no :)

Infantry formations are classed in 4 ways; Skirmishers, Warbands, Battle Line (generally shooty units that would be ranked usually, but not always, be 2 deep) and Block Infantry (the real melee guys, such as pikemen).

To distinguish a 'block' unit from a 'line' unit there needed to be something in place that set a minimum rank requirement so we don't see units of pikemen 10 wide and 2 deep claiming to be a pike block (this would be a bit silly and certainly not a reflection on how they fought....more a 'pike line').

There would be no change to the stat line on such a unit (a flat stat line is just that at a key element of Black Powder), however being a 'block' does allow some benefits. The main one being that they are much better defensively against horse compared to Battle Line units.

I hope this sets your mind at ease.

Cheers

Steve

PS. Sorry for the slight delay in getting back to you, I've just got back from the Milan Model Show and was unable to access my mails (blasted data roaming).

Hi,

I asked Steve about the Battle Reports that would be present and he kindly gave me the following reply:

We have a couple of battle reports in the book from the English Civil Wars; one is Cropredy Bridge, the other is an 'alternate history' Worcester from the guys who put on the great display at Salute.
There are , however, full army lists for Royalist, Early Parliament, Scots Covenanter, Royalist Scots and NMA.
We also have battle reports for Italian Wars, Tudors in Ireland, TYW and Grand Alliance.

Good news, though not for my wallet - after watching last years tv series on The Borgias, more temptation is about to come my way...

Good to see that this will be reality in a relatively short period of time then, very much looking forward to it.

Hey Guys! My friends have just received emails from amazon saying their pre ordered 'Pike and shotte rules' will be released on the 17th of march. Is there any truth behind this or should i save my money?

Well, it's the 9th today and the Newsletter has been released! There is nothing on there about a pre-order and Warlord always lets you know in there (sometimes even a special edition is sent out early) when you can pre-order from them. All customers who pre-order get their copies before anyone else (those in the UK, at least). The pre-order usually comes out from Warlord at least 2 weeks before publication to allow you to get your order in to them in good time. So Amazon are probably just pulling your chain! ;) The little devils.

Seems Amazon will do everything they can to get you to part with your hard-earned.

March 17th is NOT the release date.

We'll be bringing you more details about the rulebook in the next couple of weeks. Until you hear it on the Warlord newsletter it's scurrilous rumourmongering!
Cheers,

Paul Sawyer
