Hei again everyone. finally have a couple units of red coats ready for this game, now for the zulu. im trying to save a few bucks for other projects here and am curious if the warlord zulus mix well with warg factory's set? did a search and didnt see anything so had to ask. thanks for your help.

Yes and no...

Wargames Factory sets are obviously cheaper at about £13 for 30 as opposed to Warlord's £20 for 33 but to be honest you get what you pay for. The detail on the WF Zulus is noticeably softer and the proportions are a bit off, probably due to the fact that they were digitally sculpted. The heads on the WF models are are slightly flattened front to back so they look a little like discs rather than normal shaped heads, also the necks are very clumsily executed giving them the appearance of having goitres. Warlord's Zulu's upper arms are sculpted as part of the body, terminating at the elbow cunningly allowing the join to be hidden by arm bands. This does limit the amount of posing unfortunately but it looks better than the obvious join you get on the WF figures and on most GW kits. WF's have open hands allowing you to arm them as you wish adding variety but the positioning of the thumb makes them look a bit like Fonzie ;)

The good news is that you get more heads and arms than you need in the WL kit allowing you to use the extras to replace the duff parts on a set of WF Zulus. You need to make a neck but a simple greenstuff "stalk" should suffice. WF arms snipped off at the elbow will take the spare WL forearms pretty well with minimal effort.

I made the mistake of buying some of the Wargames Factory Zulus when they first came out and was going to chuck them in favour of the new Warlord versions but after using the method above I've got a load of hybrids I can use to stand at the backs of units to fill them out and add a little posing variety.

Size-wise they look fine in a unit together but unadulterated the WF figures look substantially lower quality. If you want quantity over quality bulk your impis out with WF but for the best looking army possible stick with Warlord and Empress.

anybody know how to paint leopard skin?

When I did the unmarried Zulus for Warlord, I did the Leopard print with a basecoat of GW's Vomit Brown (Vallejo alternative would be Filthy Brown (037) from their game colour range), this was highlighted with a 50/50 mix of Vomit brown and GW's Iyanden Dark Sun (Vallejo equivalent would be Heavy Goldbrown (151) again from their game colour range), a final highlight was then applied by adding Vallejo Buff (GW equivalent would be bleached bone) to the Vomit Brown/Iyanden Dark Sun mix. Irregular blotches were then applied with a thinned down black.
I've enclosed a pic so you can see the finished effect

Hope that's of some use

advice appreciated!, from the sound of it maybe i will just slowly build up my zulu force then, i try not to, but im very picky about having a uniformed look for the most part. sounds like wf stuff mixed in might drive me nuts trying to get them good enough lol. no biggie though as ecw is my main project at the minute.
