Drunken Roman centurion and kneelers WIP

Postby carvel2 » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:13 pm

A fine box of figures arrived today from the lovely Warlord Gods.
I think I've developed a habit ...a little purchase at a time, paint, finish next purchase...anyway.
THe card reader is bust so this a radio broadcast of where its up to...
After taking advice from the forum the basis for the figure is...
kneeling wounded roman.
Head and right arm chopped off.
Right arm and head replaced by
Praetorian centurion head
Cornicen right arm.

Cloak applied to shoulders draped over back...green stuff. Thats a first for me.
Vine stick modelled in green stuff...centurion leans on his staff of power.
Green stuff applied to mouth and stretching to floor.
Optio stands at his shoulder emptying an amphora of wine in disgust.

The cloak is a bit clumsy/big but imho no bad for a first go.
The kneeling romans...fine figures,no mistake are washed and ready to go. They will have the remainder of the leather covered scutums to unify the bridge defence force. I need to get better at making green stuff cloaks ...so any tips greatfully received :D

The praetorian sprue is being raided by Clive for his dark purposes...not sure what to do with the remaining figures.

I used to do green stuff capes by rolling the green stuff between to sheets of wet cling-film and leaving it to set for a bit before taking the film off one side and shaping it. I'm useless at sculpting but it was a good cheat.

I do hope you'll be posting images as you go along?

I remember seeing something on Ebob's site on how to make bardings on naked horses using tin foil. What he does is cut the tinfoil to the tailored size of the barding, coats one side in militput and glues it to the side of the horse. He then shaped it and left it to set.

I used the same method with tin foil. Old toothpaste one from my stocks. It is easily shaped. Miliput or similar for the edges at the miniature.
It was also very usefull for elves ears ;)

So the foil is the base or the top ?

I used the foil without a coating, used the Miliput just to smoothen the edge to the miniature. So I got a nice thin cape.
