My Romans.

Postby Sam91 » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:36 am

Hello all. Just starting out with "Hail Caesar" and so have the big starter set of Romans.
I'll update here with pics as soon as possible. The set arrived with some other bits and bobs I ordered (like officers) and so far I have built 20 Roman Legionaries and a Commander. I have painted two Legionaries and the aforementioned Commander.
I do have a question however; how do people get such a bright result when they use transfers? Mine are producing an almost transparent pattern when I use them.

I'm using Citadel Mechrite Red Foundation, followed by Blood Red before I stick the transfers on.

Hi Sam, welcome...always good to have more Romans on here!!!

Because I often use LBM Decals i have got into the habit of always painting the shield white before i place the decal......(although don't do this with the Warlord Auxiliary shield decals unless you want white shields!!!!)
but there may be issues with you decal sheet...it might be worth posting a photo on here if you are able, to illustrate the problem.

Welcom, I'd agree with B.D. if you paint the shield white first the colours of the transfers / decals will stand out, I found this out first time I did a legionairies shield, I painted it red and then applied the transfer and it was very dark. And just to mix it up a bit I'll sometimes piant the shield silver first to give it a metallic look not very historical but it does look good.

Here are some pics to help (found on my blog, sorry for the perhaps poor quality): http://samthegiantsblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/historical-wargaming-post-hail-caesar.html
This seemed alot quicker to do then trying to post each image individually onto here as well.

Sam nice blog......it is difficult to see exact detail of the shield but what i can see doesn't look right.
it looks like the kind of thing that happens when clear decal paper is used of a colour background...but can't be right since if you are using the decals supplied in the box with the legionaries they should be much more vibrant...like this

I'd recommend doing one on a white background..if that doesn't work there is something wrong with your decal sheet and you'll need to let warlord know so they can supply a replacment.

Ah, thought something seemed wrong. I'll try the white background and then contact. I'm glad the blog was appreciated as well. The quality of pictures is very varied due to me using my phone.

Hi again guys. I have made more progress this weekend on the Romans. Pictures are here: http://samthegiantsblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/mixed-wargaming-post-updates-on.html
I thank you for your help with the transfers, as mentioned in that post and visible in the pictures, the white background idea was highly succesfully and has made the transfers so much more bright and clear to see.
I shall update as progress continues; I have done a few Praetorians, Auxilaries and Veterans this week, as well as continuing with the already built Legionary unit.
