Spartans at the Hot Gates, Completed

Postby Biggus Dickus » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:55 pm

This is going to be rather picture heavy because I wanted to show as many steps in my painting as possible to illustrate how I go about painting my mini's......it might be of use to someone out there!!!

Thes figures are from Crocodile games because I wanted my Spartans to look like they were from the Movie, "300".

The first shot shows them all primed in Tallarn Flesh and with two washes
Image
I didn't take any photo's of the those flesh satges but they are......
a wash with waterdown GW Dark skin...then when dry a wash with watered down Scorched brown.
When dry dry brush with tallarn flesh....then 50/50 mix tallarn flesh and Bleached bone......then a top highlight of dry brushed bleached bone.
All flesh tones have now been finished...and all metal parts base coated in Gold (Vallejo old gold)

All gold parts now under go 2 heavy washes
firstly Vallejo Umber shade

Hi Stuart, glad you like the movie, it's one of my favourites!!!
Have to say i have never ordered directly from crocodile games...but i would imagine it would be ok.
I managed to get mine from ebay using various search options...wargods being one of them...it might also help making your search world wide too as they are quite rare in uk.

I purchased their 12 man set initially....then was very lucky to pick up an addditional 10 figures for peanuts that someone had painted up...not too bad as it turned out, but i wanted to start again so soaked them in dettol!!!

They do several sets...I'll like their chariot too!!! Crocodile games figures compared to Warlord/I.M. firgures are very expensive, but it is one of those situations where the look of the figure is exactly the look you are after then sadly you have to pay the extra.
C.G. also have additional 2 man packs to boost your figures.
To be honest it would be worth working out what you need in terms of numbers and going direct to C.G.
If you are after the same Leonidas as i have you'll need the "tales of war" figure....but the shield he comes with is smaller than C.G. version....so you'll need to get your hands on an additional shield and hack off the Tale of war version!
Good luck!!

Cheers B.D. I love the movie and the original, AND, I've managed to find the tales of war Leonidas on ebay and he is now ordered! :D I've also checked out crocodile games and weighed up what I might get, they are a bit pricey for single figs but the unit deal is a good price so I'll probably start there, oh plus an extra shield ;) thanks for the help and inspiration.

Can I just say that posts like this are extremely valuable to noobs like me. I don't paint this genre of mini at all but it illustrates very effectively how to paint ANY flesh-heavy mini. Looking forward to the next part!
It is not these well-fed long-haired men
that I fear, but the pale and the hungry-
looking.

Thank you very much for that Mr Chinnery, glad to be of service, I'll make sure to photograph every stage in that case!
Hope it inspires you to get into ancients

Cool..... 8-)
