how big a diameter do you need the tube carvel? the largest I've got is 3"

you can use old (plastic) pva, filler or paint pots - plaster will go on fine over pva glue.

@ Paul...I'm aiming to get my hands on one of those Nescafe discount tubs ...about 8" or so.
I really fancy a significant centerpiece that gives a balance to the Roman stuff...ie we can build too, its just different.
Perhaps something like this..
