German Three Color Camo in Normandy

Postby Vogless » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:46 pm

Hey guys, looking for some advice.

I know as long as you stick to Dunkelgelb, grau, and grune for Late war you're pretty much OK with German armor in late war.

I was wondering if it was at all common to find Pz IV's in Normandy in the base Dunkelgelb? How about platoons?

Obviously I'm talkign about the H version with some zimmerit as that's what the BA currently has.......

I don't think there were any in just the dunkelgelb. Lots in three-tone, and some in just green over the dunkel, as far as I know. If I am wrong, I am certain IO will around in a moment to correct me, or .... :?

towards the end of the war vehicles were coming out the factories just in a single colour and the crews had to paint their own scheme. apparantly paint was given to the troops to do this, but led to some very different camouflage patterns. However as most german vehicles were virtually covered from track to turret in branches the vehice could have been bright pink and you wouldn't have seen the clour.

Well, I did a really nice basecoat in Dunkelgelb and was feeling lazy, hoping to stick with it.

I went ahead with the 3 tone scheme be posting pics soon!

My understanding is that dark yellow was a factory basecoat as of early 1943, camo was applied in the field. If the tanks is of pre early 1943 manufacture then I'm going to take a punt and say that it would be grey, likely with dark yellow painted over the top in the field, then camo.

I think that would work, too.

You could always do a snow application, too!

PA is correct. Late war tanks left the factory in a yellowish colour RAL 7028. Due to material shortages that was often a very thin spraying on RAL 8020 Priming (see below) .

The tanks are transported to the units and got there a camo with Tarnpasten or liquid colours. With them it was easy to change it with the change of terrain or weather.

But 19th August 1944 the factories got order to add a standard camo, the so called "Hinterhalttarnung". Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 as base Olivgrün 6003 and Rot-/ Schokoladenbraun RAL 8017 in spots.
Zimmerit use ended in Sept 1944 and the tanks got only a priming in RAL 8020 Rostschutz, a red-brown colour.
31. Oct 1944 there was a new order for "Verzerrungstarnanstrich". It consisted of the RAL 8020 priming and in addition 50% of the surface got spots in Olivgrün RAL 6003 and Dunkelgelb RAL 7028
And 30. Nov. 1944 there was again a new order.
It was not realy to be used by all factories before June 1945
(War end.... ;) )
Base colour Olivgrün RAL 6003 with sharp contrast camo in Rot-/ Schokoladenbraun and Dunkelgelb The order stated that vehicles could be delivered in Olivgrün so that the front units could do the camo.

There had been rumours in older books about late war grey painted vehicles but that was a mistake from b/w photos of Olivgrün vehicles.

So some factories delivered them in the new Olivgrün, some in Olvgrün with camo and some still in Yellow Ral 7028.

Grant   just an add on, no correction.
