Re: Cutting Teeth in Wargaming.

Just enjoying a break at work so i thought I would use the time to update this thread.

The game was again played on a huge board think it was 24x6 and I have never seen so many "green" tanks facing a smaller number of "yellow" tanks.

My son Alex was designated Alex Wittman and had a troop of 5 Tiger 1s. As the destruction of Wittmans tank became an objective for the allies ,we secretly designated one of the 5 Tigers . Our objective was to try and occupy the next village some 10ft away from where we started. The tanks were first supplied with rubber shells produced from the nearby Tyre factory! and then we set off. We did get a false start as our leading tank got immobilised on the bridge and therefore we had to back up and set off to the nearest ford some 6ft away from this bridge. In the meantime the Bergepanther was despatched to recover and repair this Tiger. One thing I really do love about KGN is inclusion and uses for toys that you wouldn't normally use like recovery vehicles.

3 Turns later ( Tigers are bloomin slow!) the 4 Tigers crossed the Ford followed by the now repaired Tiger some 3 turns behind.

We were attacked by 2 Thunderbolts and a Cannon firing Mustang which surpressed (Wittmans tank) but were chased off by the Wirbelwind that shot down 2 the other being surpessed by an half track quad .

Our next encounter were 7 MKVii Churchills. We exchanged fire over the next 2 turns just to see our 88mm shells just bounce off the Churchills front armour. Their shells did the same from their inferior 75mm guns . This stalemate continued as the Allied commander refused to close in and our Tigers were too slow to try and outflank them . WE decided just to keep the Churchills pinned until a troop of Stug 3s supported by Mk4s took some of the Churchills out ,leaving us to go on our way towards our objective.

Here we came accross some US Shermans just outside the village of which we took one out but saw our shells bounce off the other 2. Here sadly the game had to come to a close with an Axis victory as the Allies reached their Break point and were forced to retreat.

Alex enjoyed the game and with only having one type of tank to worry about (Brian used the rest of my Germans) which meant I could teach him the basics as we went along without "bogging" the game down.

A Special thanks to Mrs P for laying on a superb buffet and Brians son Nathan and assistant Luke for ferrying the supplies of tea and other drinks upto us. Also a special thanks to Brian who must have been up very early on a Sunday morning to organise the table.

A great time had by all which is what this hobby is about. :D

Time duration 10.30-17.00

Fantastic :D

I have a LotR Mordor army whose sole purpose is to fight number 1 son's Gondor force. Our last game was yesterday morning and saw Aragorn and Boromir cutting a swathe through my massed hordes - bet he wished he hadn't given me a troll for Christmas though ;)

I think if the father and son relationship is far more special when they share the same hobby. Something to cherish until like someone said they discover girls ;)

Sounds like fun!!

As an aside, how do you like KGN? I've heard that you pay a lot for background and not many rules, but that might be a plus...?

Also what scale figures did you use?

10.00-17.30? Now that's proppa' wargaming! :D

Well KGN has pros and cons

The Cons

1)THe fact that it is a GW/FW product can seem to be a negative by some people.
2) The author has been released by the above so it is unlikely that there will be further supplements published by GW. However not too worry see the pros section
3) The price tag. For some people a £48.00 price tag is a hefty price to pay for a rulesbook.
4) A few ( and just a few) of the vehicle entries ar a bit suspect. For example there were no AEC MK2 Armoured Cars in Normandy. But this is really nit picking .
5) The rulesbook is limited as it stands for the Normandy campaign only but see below.

THe pros
1) A beautiful book all in full colour with many pictures of model scenery ,vehicles etc. All your army lists are in there and there are bucketfuls of scenarios.
2) The author and a few dedicated people of the Wargamers Guild are developing supplements as we speak including one for modern Cold War.First of these an army list for the Brit paras is in the next edition of Wargames illustrated.
3) It is Old school style rules and are quite easy to pick up .
4) It is desingned for 20mm but there is no reason why any scale 15mm and larger can't be used with little or no modification.
5)It includes rules for Engineering,Ambulances,Recovery Vehicles etc which are often not included in other rules systems.
6) As it is one to one scale you can use standard orbats to organise your troops.
7) I find it is a fun game and has got me back into WW2 gaming after many years absence.
8) Fun to play
9) Our club loves it and is the most popular historical game played at our club.
10) Your vehicles need not be that be expensive . Airfix are fine! ;)

There's a British Airborne OOB for KGN in this month's Wargames Illustrated.
"You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me, it's a full time job." – Lt. Bromhead to Prince Dabulamanzi before the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

I think his artillery and aircraft/anti aircraft rules are brilliant.

Nice set of rules.

Not sure I could play them in 28mm without going broke, though. Switching to 20mm just seems silly to me after investing what I have into 28mm at this point.

Nothing wrong having collections in different scales.

28mm is best for Skirmish .

15 and 20mm are better for larger battles. Both these latter scales are getting cheaper by the year thanks to Forged in Battle (15mm) ,Zvesda (15 and 20mm), PSC (15 and 20mm with some limited 28mm stuff) and Armour fast(20mm).

The PSC Panthers look really good before I had them snatched out of my hands by someone eager to buy them !
