Clearly PVT Murphy holding off the whole German army with a .50cal on the back of that knocked tank is one of the great moments of WW2.....didn't he start out a Private and end up a 5 star General for winning the war single handed?
Then went on to be become a famous movie star....limitless talent, Thank Crunchy for Hollywood.
If The Germans had a rifle section made up of Audie Murphy Clones they would have conquered Russia by Tea time.

it's going to take a hell of soldier to beat that..............Since Crocodile Dundee is an Irregular he doesn't count so no point in voting for him.

What this Forum actually lacks is a Sarcasm Smilie......
Personally I'd rate George and Mildred if we have moved on to Movie soldiers, which clearly we have, or perhaps then I'd say Jedi Knights, it's close
i might as well be pedantic and say it wasn't a tank the 50cal was on but a tank destroyer. ;)

The .50 story is great. Unfortunately no living man saw him mowing down a full company of huns. He, on a blazing Tank destroyer, firing the open mounted .50 . And they all stood around that thing in astonishment, waiting to be hit. Nobody daring to shoot the shining ....... 8-)
America needed heroes, but I believe nearly as much in Captain America as in Murphy.

But hey, he became Corporal in Africa for his first two kills. Shooting two fleeing Italian officers in the back. :o (I'm brought up with the believe that a gentleman never shoot a sitting bird, or a running Italian)

So for me he is the ultimate :?:

It could have been worse though.....in the back of my mind I was thinking it might have been a knocked out truck!
If we are going to relate the story we might as well get the facts right ;)

Could we re fight the scene on a table.....I'll be the Germans 4000 point army........Audie and his K.o.'d T.D. are 4000 points.....am I allowed king tigers??? ;)

You're welcome to your opinion, of course but I think I'll stick with everyone else and established fact. ;)

Well, the story of the Italian Officers is established fact. They tried to escape on horse, no risk for him. Bang bang - Corporal. If this makes the ultimate soldier....

I'm with the BD wish to replay that Murphy story. He was very short, may be we find a set of rules giving him a mini target super advantage. Many many save rolls.
In the war he was wounded three times, one by artillery, one sniper. Both only light wounds. But killed 200+ Enemies? His luck would make me check the dices in every wargame.

My hero is the unknown GI cook who defended Bastogne. Never realy trained for that and without killer instinct. But doing his duty. Never getting the medal of honour. He is the ultimate universal soldier. At his pots or with a rifle.

You need to be a brave man to work a (M1941?) field cooker. Anything that requires you to use a bicycle pump to pressurise petrol I will not be within 25m of. Not that coleman stoves are much better.

I'd like to nominate myself.

On exercise on Salisbury Plain, stopped to cook up a spot of lunch in a big warehouse structure with a tar floor. Got the little collapsible metal stove out (from the 24hr pack) and cooked up some sausages (from the Spar on the corner) and a spot of tea.

When it came time to go I went to pick up the wee stove .... and it was embedded in the floor. The tar had melted and the thing had sunk in, never to be removed.

I often wonder if it's still there.
