I remember a story from his book, I can't remember the exact wording but he was trying to convince a tank commander to follow him across a bridge or something and the tank commander cited how thin the hull was on his tank for a reason not to.

Audie pinches the collar of his wool shirt and says "How thick do you think that is? I'm going and you'll follow me".

My ultimate movie soldier is Petersen, the guy in the Green berets who got killed at the end and get a latrine named after him.

Murphy was a killer. Infantrymen killing more than 200 enemies must love to kill. Usefull in war but dangerous in peace time. His comrades had a ambivalent view of him. Brave in fight but that very young boy Corporal / Sergeant / Lt was a pain in the ass too. (There is a nice TV interview from the 60's with some veterans, all praising him but there are some statements.....)

Post WW II he used to sleep with a .45 in the bed. Often threatening his first wife Wanda Hendrix with it. Today we name that post traumatic malfunction. His wive had other names for that..... .

If you have to be a psychopath to be the ultimate soldier......... Then I prefer Petersen.

Following Mike Morrison the figure of Peterson is based on a real Green Beret that was kia. Lets assume 50/50 fact and fiction.

So Captain America was the greatest Soldier of WWII, given more then 50% was factual?

Clearly PVT Murphy holding off the whole German army with a .50cal on the back of that knocked tank is one of the great moments of WW2.....didn't he start out a Private and end up a 5 star General for winning the war single handed?
Then went on to be become a famous movie star....limitless talent, Thank Crunchy for Hollywood.
If The Germans had a rifle section made up of Audie Murphy Clones they would have conquered Russia by Tea time.

it's going to take a hell of soldier to beat that..............Since Crocodile Dundee is an Irregular he doesn't count so no point in voting for him.

What this Forum actually lacks is a Sarcasm Smilie......
Personally I'd rate George and Mildred if we have moved on to Movie soldiers, which clearly we have, or perhaps then I'd say Jedi Knights, it's close
