Hmm, I would not support that view. Surprise.
Most makers try do do their best to make the miniatures correct. And most miniatures are far better in that aspect than these new ones.
In this special case I think its the customer who demands that wrong style because the popular view from old books, cheap bargain table picture reprints and movies is deeply rooted in the buyers. (We see the same here in the forum with the cry for Roman war chariots ) . And the commercial makers satisfy that demand.
That the makers supply enough correct helmets with the set is the best they can do. Let the fantasy gamers build them with the horns and the historical gamers do it without them.
